Picked up 24 over the weekend
Drove out to Ohio to pick up this 1996 24 from board member cgarrett. Cordell is a great guy and took really good care of the boat (as did all previous owners). Boat is extremly clean and runs VERY hard. Can anyone clue me in as to how many 24's were made in '96 before switching over to the step bottom. Is this the only one?

Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
Have seen this boat go up for sale since it was back in NY and knew this time I had to have it.

Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
Good looking boat! Maybe FX10 can answer your question...

Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
I'll ask Bob and JC today.

Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
Yeah I am guilty of lurking. Wanted to make sure that these boats were really everything that I had heard since you don't see too many of them in my area...and I gotta say I am very impressed. Sort of a tease though after a test drive when picking it up, it was straight up to Northern NY for winterization and storage....that is frost you see on the cover. The night before up there it had dropped below 30 degrees up there. I really wanted a boat that just murders anything from 1-3 ft chop and that I could still kick some of the twin big block guys around with and that wasn't much bigger than my current ride.

Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
Congrats! That's a nice boat. I don't know about the straight V but the step hull likes a 4 blade prop MUCH better.
|
Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
Congratulation!!!! :drink:
I too almost bought your boat a few years back from the original owner Gary in Albany, NY. He'll be happy to hear she's back in the area. I don't know how many 24' were built in 96 but my 97 also has the straight V bottom. 1998 the year Dave's boat was built, was the first year of the step bottom. If you have questions we are all happy to talk boats. We've got a 5 months before we'll be back on the water here in the north land... Good Luck with her and welcome to the Superboat crew!!! :drink: |
Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
Thanks guys....There really isn't anything I have to do to the boat..maybe a stereo and another battery once the stereo goes in and that is it. Really can't wait to see what this boat can do....dunno if I will ever be able to muster up the courage to match Gary's 82-84 on gps when he had it but I would be pretty happy with 80. Will need some seat time before really pushing it. Still can't get over how hard this boat runs. Also was looking for Superboat decal (same as the red/white/blue one on the boat) to put on the window of the truck...anyone know where to get one, or have one made. Thanks

Call Superboat for the decals.
Dave has already suggested a 4 blade prop. He and I both run 28p Bravo I props. A 4 blade prop may be a click slower than the 3 blade at WOT but the boat will be more stable. I had suggested to Cordell that he try a 24p or 26p Bravo I as the engine in your boat is a higher revving machine than Dave's or mine. One other upgrade you may want to consider is converting your helm to full hydraulic. At speeds above 75mph it is widely recommended to have a full hydraulic system. The boat will track like it's on rails with a full hydraulic steering system and a 4 blade prop. |
Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
You won't have any trouble hitting 80 with 500 HP. Good advice from Pat about the steering. I converted to FULL hydraulic last year and it made a noticable difference.
|
Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
Cordell did mention how he had tried a 26p Bravo and I will definitely be on the hunt for one this winter. Said it definitely helped to eliminate the chine walk on the top end....I am not as concerned about losing a few mph on top end to gain all round better acceleration, mid range and riding characteristics. Interesting about the full hydro. steering, never thought about it....what does it ad on top of the external steering. Boat seemed tight on the upper end but like I said I didn't go much past 3/4 throttle

The Add On system utilizes a cable helm and the stock Merc power steering directional valve. The external steering ram is plumbed to the internal piston/valve. A Full hydraulic system has a hydraulic helm, no cable, so the external ram or rams are controlled directly by the helm. This is a lot better because any play from the cable helm and cable connection at the stern is eliminated. |

Congrats on the new purchase! :drink:

Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
Cuposter didn't Cordell buy that 24' not to long ago ?????
|
Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
Yup he bought it this past spring. He was saying that he sold his cig and got boat itch, which was when he picked this boat up. I guess he bought it from a board member in Indianna who bought it from Gary back here in NY.

Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend

Where are you located in upstate NY? |
Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
Motor started as a 365hp 454 mag from the factory. Shop near Albany built the motor up to what it is now. Tore it down to the block checked the bottom end and then rebuilt her back up using all the top notch parts....have the list and the dyno numbers with my paperwork. Motor was built to be a blower motor but Gary opted not to go that route. Part of the reason I think it is such a solid motor. Dyno print outs showed peak hp at 499 horses. No hour meter so I can't tell ya how many hours. Have a pic at home of the motor on my other computer, that I will throw up when I get home. Motor moves this boat quiet well. It is interesting to see that with the new hulls only 375hp is pushing the hull very close to 80. I noticed that there was the option of the light layup hull....what did this entail?

Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
CONGRATULATIONS! I have been one this boat, it is very clean and very fast.
Good Luck! |
Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
T-Islands,
I am not that far from you actually. My family has a place up in Morristown (about 9 miles outside of Ogdensburg) Just outside the start of the islands by Brockville. That is where I keep the boat. I like to run down to Clayton and such, and my other boat was just a little too slow to make the trips worth it and would turn into whole day trips. Where abouts are you located? Your boat came out great by the way. I can't believe how well it runs with that 496. I would definately be interested in the prop...pm me the details. |

Here is a shot of that beautiful engine 499HP/454... :D
The new 375HP/496mag makes more like 390HP and nearly 500ftlbs of torque. That is not too far from my 415HP/502 that really only makes about 400HP. The "light weight hull" is about 200lbs lighter; FX10 should be able to give us the detail... |
Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
Cuposter,
Great to hear there will be another SB on the river next year. I am located about a 1/2 mile up river from the TI Bridge, I can see Chalks and Foxys restaurant from my dock and Rock Island light house from the point. Some charts show my place as Helena Island or the Orient group. Your boat looks great; you will love the 24, runs great on the river. I'll get you some details on the prop. |
Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
Man the board knows more than I do about my own boat....Thanks for the pic Pat! Pretty sure that my hull is NOT the lightweight layup as it weighs in at 4400 on the tailer and about 3500 by itself, but was curious as to what is involved in that layup (different materials, no finished cuddy, etc). T-Islands I know right around where your place is, Usually stick to the U.S. and Canadian channels once I get down your way but I will have have to look up exactly where you are on the gps when I am down past The Bay next time.

Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
Pat that is a 454? What HP did it start out at the 310, 365, 385 ????

Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
Great looking boat. Congrats. :drink:

Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
I wondered how long you were going to take to come out with the news of your new purchase!
I am really glad to see it go to someone who will take care of it and really like the boat. I knew right away when you left your shoes on the dock during the ride and pulled out a towel to wipe it down after the run that it was going to a good home. It was nice to meet you and work with during the purchase. Get the 26p. 4 blade as I mentioned to you. I loved the boat and I am actually sad to see it go. My wife on the other hand got spoiled with the previous 31 foot boat we had and my thoughts were to go back up in size is why I originally listed it. Unfortunately the company that I work for filed bankruptcy and my future is now uncertain so I have to wait and see what will happen. I hope you enjoy the boat for many years to come. Cordell |

Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
Ha, yeah finally decided to let the cat out of the bage...Think I JUST got rested up from the drive this past weekend. Thanks again Cordell for everything. I can't tell you how much I appreciate everything you did. You really are a stand up guy and great to work with. You made me feel very comfortable about the purchase even with it being long distance. I really hope that everything works out and keep in touch.

To build one up to make 500 crank shaft horse power would involve a hotter cam with the associated valve-train components, the heads ported for increased flow & milled to increase the compression a bit, and a bigger carb to feed it at higher rpm. And of course, good flowing exhaust as to not choke it once in the boat... :D If my memory serves me correctly, Gary told me that he saw a 10mph increase in top speed with the engine modifications... :evilb: cuposterchild, I told you we love to rap about this chitttt... :drink: |

My package weighed in at like 4650lb and I think your steel trailer would weigh a bit more than 900lbs. |
Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
Pat
I was just looking through the paper work been passed on with the boat. You might be right....my hull dry weight is 3260 lbs and when Cordell had it weighed on and off the trailer the total package was 4400, with the boat off (3500lbs) the trailer weighed in at 1100lbs. |

Didn't your rebuilt 454mag make like 575HP on the dyno? :D JC did a bit more to yours though. Like Dart raised runner heads ported and polished, and a solid lifter cam... :evilb: |
Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
Actually, we ended up going w/ a full hydraulic roller set up.
Dart Iron Eagle Heads, port/polished intake etc... Only thing left from the 454 was block(461) crank & conn. rods, and these were not left untuched, all balanced. Dyno was 560hp/550tq. Too bad mine was not a lt layup. :( It would have been a nice powerplant in a y2k. |

Great power for your old 24' Pantera too. Did you ever weigh that package? My 1989 24' Pantera Sport only weighed about 100lbs more than my 24' Super. Your SE model was probably a couple more again though... |
Re: Picked up 24 over the weekend
never weighed it.
I'm guessing its inline w/ the pantera site: 4000lbs. |
