Default Drive extension on a 24

Anyone ever put an drive extension on a 24?

Just curious what the results were.

Not that I am looking at doing this, was just reading an article on them.

Tim,
Ever see the article on the X Box ?? Kinda like an ITS, but has up and down like 7 inches. Supposedly with the right prop, it's at least a 5 MPH increase in speed.

Hi Tim,

I've asked this question before, and have not heard of anyone adding and extension to a 24' Super. I have seen pictures of few similar size race boats with extension boxes. But, again I have not heard how they run.

I have thought about adding an extension box on my boat from time to time. I still have a parts quote from Imco sitting in my desk here at work.
My reasoning is not necessarily to gain speed but to add length to the boat for better rough water handling. I could also envision changing the 280 tabs for a set of 380s if the drive was moved back.

The stumbling bock for me, has been the $$. I can swallow buying the box as they can be had used for about $600. The $$ for new steering rams and a shorter lower have held me back. Too bad I missed out when Zup was selling his Bravo stuff.

At this point, my thoughts are toward spending $$ on a 5 blade prop for better rough water handling. T-Mone runs a P5-X on his 24' Pantera and has told me on a number of occasions the rough water handling is far better 5 blade vs. a 3 or 4 blade.

No I have never seen this, sounds interesting. I will take a look.

Any way no cash for these kind of upgrades this year. I will be doing the internal hydraulic steering and that's it, thanks for all the info guys.

Also redoing a 16' Donzi I picked up a month ago. Lake toy.

Pat,

My thoughts exactly. Improve the handling. But I suspected the cost was going to be expensive.

I would be interested in learning more about the the PX-5.

T.
I continue to try every prop that I can get my hands on.

The fastest prop I've run on my boat was a labbed 27p Merc Mirage plus T-Mone has. The prop pushed my boat 1-2mph faster than my labbed 28p Bravo 1, but the hole shot sucked and the boat was a hand-full over 70mph.

I did have a chance to try OH-Zone's labbed 25.5p Hydro P5-X last spring. With the 5 blade, my boat had a totally different feel; the whole boat lifts out of the water. I only ran in the river on relatively calm water though. Speed was down 1-2mph vs. my 28 B1 as expected with the added drag from the additional blade.

T-Mone swears by the P5-X on his Pantera in the rough and that is likely the direction I'm going next.

Anyone have a used 25p or 26p Hydro P5-X they want to let go cheap?

Pat,
I tried my brothers 27p Mirage which is not labbed. Ran OK, like you said poor hole shot but it was fast.

I have two B1, 28 labbed props. that run completely different.
I had the fastest (by 3 MPH) tweaked last year for a little more bow lift and it is fast and stable. I continue to think that I got "one of those props" that really works well. No two props perform the same.

I had a line on a used PX-5 last year, should have bought it but was informed they do not run well on a 24??? Oh well.
