To get 500+HP out of a 383 (6.2L) and be marine friendly would be tough. Unless, of corse, you bolt a blower on it. Merc Racing did build the 377 Scorpian for a while and I believe that was rated 350HP at the prop.
I have seen some nice 450HP 383 cube sbc marine engines offered by some builders.

This new Raylar is a 550HP 450cube (7.4L) small block...

I could not say if it is chit or not. I did ask how this "new" motor would compared to the old 377. The response was this motor was being developed to replace a big block in some applications, with the HP and torque numbers to match. They quoted numbers but I cannot remember what the heck they were. I guess we will need to see what they release over the coming months.
