Getting Ready !!!!

It'looks like were done with the NASTY WINTER !!!! ( THANK GOD ) we will be uncovering the Y2K this weekend, motor all freshened up will be in the hull next week. So who is doing what ????

krakmeup 03-21-2007 02:55 PM

Yea!!!! Congrats!!

Tomorrow night external steering gets installed, Saturday is first local fun run, finishing my stereo install this weekend, - oh yea, RA is shopping for new swimsuits!

Life is good.....Superboating's good!!

t-islands 03-21-2007 03:04 PM

Finishing up the install of internal hydraulic steering system. A few minor details to work through there. Change the plugs, replace a bolt in the drive cooler and good to go.

Pat McPherson 03-21-2007 03:23 PM

Well, I pulled the winter cover (tarp) off Sunday.
Yesterday she left to the fiberglass guy's shop for a few minor repairs.
When she comes home, I'll start on my to do list. That list is rather long so I won't bore you all.
As is the case every year, I'm shooting to launch the first weekend in May...

Good Thread Gary; I'm sure we'll have lots to talk about in the coming weeks...:drink:

TeamSaris 03-21-2007 03:31 PM

Going Snowmobiling Saturday and skiing sunday.:D :D
Bottom work on the Avanti and a lil project of my own.

sprucin' up the drives, mechanically and cosmetically, hanging them saturday, hoping to get the back seat out to be repaired, too....be h2o ready by mid-april/first of may...

jayhawk261 03-21-2007 06:57 PM

We went over to storage the other day to take a peek and make sure she was still well.

I'm going to pull her out in another week or 2 and clean and wax. I need to do a tune up, but I think I'll wait until I run the first tank of gas through so the new plugs don't get washed with the stabilizing agent.

Planning on NGK plugs, some 8.5 MSD wires. Any thoughts on a cap and rotor with brass tips for a 2000 454 mag mpi?

Being computer controlled, is there any sense in checking/setting the timing? What is the stock setting? Pat?

MDGperformance 03-21-2007 07:24 PM

jayhawk, cap and rotor with brass contacts agood idea, all the new caps from merc have them, old ones used aluminum wore out fast made engines lose a little of power, you need to check timing after changing cap-rotor,can be off.You can plug in a timing tool(cheap tool)or better yet plug into scan tool and put it in base mode, you can also check for codes.Rynda makes a nice scan tool that works great for simple checks i think they cost around 400,the timing plug that puts it in base mode 10 bucks or so.

z.zuperboat 03-21-2007 07:30 PM

Need a few good days to fit my cabin door project. readjust the valves and do some prop testing. I was able to get a #6 prop adaptor to try some 5 blades. Not warm enough for me until mid May but you never know. When the doors done i will post some picks.

When I replaced my cap, rotor, and wires the last time, I bought Merc stuff mail order. I'll be doing the cap and rotor again this year as I change those every other.
If you like NGK plugs go with the extended tip BPR6FS. I'll probably buy the AC version because they are about 1/2 the $$.
You should check the timing after you change parts. I set mine at 10° BTDC initial. You will need to lock out the cumputer to check and set the timing.

FASTERDAMITT 03-21-2007 08:10 PM

Dusting off the boat for another 90+ run! Maybe change the w/p impeller.

Pure Energy 03-22-2007 06:09 AM

After finally getting allignment right the cold weather set in. I have some hoses to connect, fix alternater, give her a once over and I'm ready!! Props will be going to LI propellar for tweaking.

fastedy 03-22-2007 06:34 AM

Have to find a dead short, Plagued me at the World's, ran engine last week, notice volt gauge jumping around, went to
engine and everytime I grabbed part of the wiring harness the engine would shut completely off. I'll get it figured out this
weekend, hopefully.

Eddie

z.zuperboat 03-22-2007 08:58 AM

Eddie I had the same trouble years back and turned out to be the plug on the harness in my case.
P E what alignment ? What are you doing now ?

Last time motor was out, there were 2 washers missing from the rear engine mount which through the drive alignment off. Took 3 of us a day of trial and error to figure out it was missing washers. Alignment is good now, just need to reconnect the water hoses and clean the bilge.....that I just re-gelled while the motor was out!!

I'm confident in a trouble free season!!!!:D JC rebuilt the motor, again, dynoed and tuned a bit on the fat side. Motor runs sweet, just needs a friendly operator:D

So if I understand correctly, I can get the timing tool, plug it in, set the timing, and then unplug it. Is this correct? Back in my Mustang days, you had to remove the chip from the distributor, and set the timing and then put the chip back in. I assume it is something like that. Where can I get the timing tool? Trick?

10* sounds good to me Pat. I was guessing around there or 12*.

As far as a cap and rotor, does anyone have or know of a cross reference from the mercruiser parts to an accel or mallory cap and rotor? I imagine thos might be cheaper than a mercury part!

I bought the code tool from Rynda a few years back; I think it was like $25. You plug it into the harness the same place a scan tool would go. It has a switch to lock out the computer and a group of lights for reading codes.
The cap is the same as a Delco and different versions can be purchased at just about any auto parts store. I like the Merc version because it has the cylinder numbers molded in.

HuntingtonBeach 03-22-2007 07:07 PM

Lets see...

Gonna kill procharger if I can't get a unit by next week...

Myco is gonna put a big hurt on the wallet with the price for the trailer I'm eyeing.

John is going to start charging me storage... at the long term rate!!!

Good news is I have piece of mind knowing that I'm getting everything just the way I want it!!!

Rick, if you see this do you have a recomendation for a cover company? If the boats going to sit in the corner it might as well be covered.

Rob

I used P&G Canvas on LI.. Not cheap but nice work.

Pure Energy 03-24-2007 12:03 PM

P&G did my covers too. Trailering and cockpit. Very nice work and perfect fit. Both came with the boat when I bought it. I was told they cost around $3k

FX10 03-25-2007 08:54 AM

The way this weather is going. Hopefully 2 weeks and I'm in.

SUPER AIR 03-27-2007 08:39 AM

ANY ONE KNOW THIS 24' GUY ASKING $6000 or Best OFFER sounds like a good deal - located in Islip ?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...6314023&rd=1,1

z.zuperboat 03-27-2007 08:57 AM

Sounds and looks like a deal. Gotta get a close look and sound the hull. Probably worth 10 with some work. Not a money maker.

Pat McPherson 03-29-2007 07:19 PM

OK Guys,
I talk to my fiberglass guy today. He said the repairs are done and he only needs to buff out the new gelcoat...
Luke also told me that he believes that my trailer is to blame for the stress crack along the port side strake, not my driving habits. I guess I'll be adding another support/bunk...
Anyway, going skiing this weekend, so I'll be picking her up early next week. Shooting to be ready for the water first weekend in May...

Anyone know the Y2k 496 in NEWSDAY 4-sale in NJ exit 80 ? Guys asking $50,000

Pat McPherson 03-30-2007 11:09 AM

Superbabi (Gary) knows the boat and owner.

cuposterchild 03-30-2007 04:23 PM

Gonna be a while.

Still got ice up our way. Wont be doing much to the boat until after my vacation at the end of April. Just looking at these pics I just got of last year and getting myself anxious

cuposterchild 03-30-2007 04:24 PM

Even got one of T-Island's ride in the mix! :D

cuposterchild 03-30-2007 04:29 PM

Just need to do some small stuff this year so far. Add 2nd battery w/switch, new battery boxes and new wired remote on the dash for the stereo. Also the normal spring maintenance stuff.

I had totally forgot that I was going to look that up for you. Very sorry about that. The red vinyl on the windscreen was done before I got the boat. But when the boat was in the Albany area, the previous owner had the work done by Rich Olson at Olson signs in Scotia, NY.

Superbabi - how much room does he have to move $ on the 30 Y2k ? I like it.

From reading his add, I don't think he's going to move much.
I wonder what it would take to get that paint off the bottom? I do remember the fist coat was applied at Superboat.

SUPER AIR, I'm not quite sure he will move on the price, I know he is not hurting for cash, however the bottom paint may be an issue that many guys would not want on there boats, so perhaps an area to point out to him, you never know. Give him a call.
