Business Handed down through generations

1 Attachment(s)
I have owned my business since 89 and it has had many up's and downs however in the last 8 years it has showed growth from one year to the next . I'm thinking in about another nine years my son who will be 31 can continue running the business I have built .
We who love our boats and the brands we support hope that the currant owners of these brands pass the build process down through generations . I know of boats that have been getting built for thirty five years but it would be nice to see these brands getting built for seventy plus years .

Coen who is now seventy could hand his business down to Jr and the brand could continue being built ! Is this the case ?

Superbabi 12-26-2012 05:13 PM

Superboat looks like a Ghost Town ???

elvisali 12-26-2012 10:30 PM

I dont know what the plans are, but i can tell you if Jr was in charge, there would be a center console cuddy cabin model being built right now :)

hope everyone has a happy new year

OCCJoe 12-26-2012 11:09 PM

Well I've never met Jr . I know he's voiced his opinion to me through eddie's account a few times . In the end some people just can't run a business . I know rite now my son couldn't do it but I'm hoping over the next few years something will click .

For me I can do every job in my business and this allows me to keep the QC and my employes have respect for me knowing that I know what I'm looking at and what i'm talking about .

I don't think I've ever seen Coen Sr in all his glory but I've heard that he could design , build , rig and drive with the best of them . By the time I met him he just seemed to have lost the passion for building boats . Boats are supposed to make people happy , yet here is a man that is pis$ed off at the world and has such a negative attitude toward every idea that is proposed to him .

I just hope that Jr can lay up boats , rig like his dad , and be willing to grow and continue to create new products that people will desire . And then maybe he will have something to pass down to his children so the Superboat name will live on ..

GEORGE YURICK 12-31-2012 08:17 AM

yeah its sad when you drive by there and there is nothing going on....gotta cost a ton to keep that building and lot just sitting there and not earning anything.....

I dont know if JR has the desire to build boats and i think he has a decent business of his own that he runs....

Honestly at 70 if i was john i would think of putting the whole thing up for sale and see what happens....Let someone buy it and revamp some of the designs and market the boats and they could probably be a small but profitable boat builder....The thing is you gotta keep up with the changing times and people want different things.....right now fast center consoles with liners and cabins are the rage....i bet the 34 would make a good fast tripple engined CC given some updates....the 21 people love the old one so bring back the old deck.....there needs to be a boat in between the 24 and the 30 in a center console version....things like that....I dont wanna build boats but if i did i would try to work something out with john....

the example i always use in the fact that you can be a small succesful boat builder is Steiger Craft....i Worked there for a short time and they build between 75-150 boats a year depending on the times and they make a living doing it....But they keep changing the boats for the better and to what the consumer is asking for....are they the best boat out there No but they have a following and build a really nice utilitarian style boat and they care about what they build.....they will also customize anything on any boat to the customers liking without giving them a hard time...the offer there input but if a customer wants no seats at all in the boat he gets no seats.....if he wants the floor painted purple he gets it purple....LOL.....thats what a Small CUSTOM boat builder does....

02cool 12-31-2012 02:55 PM

Rick???? Rick????.......
Hopefully someone steps up to the plate , and keeps these boats going.
May have to do a " power match " type of company like so many boats are today with Mercury. [ keeps total price of package down when you buy motors exclusively from one manufacturer. May be time to re-vamp the line up, Y2k is a great success, may be time to go back to the roots and build 24's in closed deck and center consoles. How about a
26' X 7' 6" closed bow and a center console model with a mini cabin in the bow like the Scarabs.

OCCJoe 12-31-2012 04:57 PM

Rick has moved to North Carolina to enjoy the warmer weather . Keep an eye out for those 24's in closed bow sit down , Open canopy poker run , and an open fisherman .

Tinkerer 12-31-2012 05:02 PM

OBUMMER will do everything possible to make sure YOU don't

OCCJoe 12-31-2012 05:06 PM

he's got his hand stuck in the pocket of my wheel shop already . so what if he gets a little more at this point

frankenstein 01-06-2013 01:18 AM

I know jr pretty well and know sr somewhat. I have not seen jr in a few months, but up until then he wasn't running his own business and I'm pretty sure he still isn't. As far as it costing a "ton" to run the shop---- have you seen the shop ? It has changed locations over the years, but it's basically a garage, maybe slightly bigger. As far as jr taking over, who knows. Him and sr have banged heads forever and it kinda drove jr away from the building end of it, but he still is very interested in boat racing and cruising and who knows what the future may bring. I would love to see it work. sr makes a great product, it would be nice for it to continue. Who knows, maybe one day discovery channel will turn it into a series, and for those of you who don't know sr and jr, it would be very entertaining, sound familiar ?

Lets hear it,What is it your looking to hear? you want to buy SUPERBOAT?, make him an offer, I would love to hear it, you could get a good headstart on your boat building bussiness, too many no names out there to compeat with.

OCCJoe 01-20-2013 09:38 AM

No Jr ! I would love to see you get in there and update some of the molds , Sell or scrap some of the $hit ya'll have at the factory . And continue your family business .. You telling me that you don't have any interest in building boats like your pops . You race so I no you have some passion for it .
And would you please get your own account !
And I'm just trying to generate some action in the Superboat Forum where it has been dead and boring . If there were a new build to follow or something we would all be good .

fastedy 01-20-2013 07:46 PM

John signs his name when he uses my account

I live in the Midwest and do a ton of boating at the lake of the ozarks. The water at the ozarks gets very snotty. No one around here has ever heard of Superboat unless they follow racing but I think they would be a real hit here. I just bought a super boat and can't wait till summer time hits so I can see how it handles the blender. There are a ton of poker runs and the world famous shoot out here (that i will be running in with the y2k) and I am hoping to get the Superboat a lot of attention and hopefully some people will want some built. I can't see how they would not be a hit here. I have been on the phone with Coen a lot and am going to promote them to some dealerships here. Hoping they will want Coen to build a new one and send it here. I really want to see Superboat get a lot of business from here as I want them to be around for along time to come.

Well you can WANT in one hand and $hit in the other and see which one gets you the furthest ! But unless you can convince Coen to come out of retirement that aint gonna happen ! Just saying ! LOL !

Supreboat in 01-30-2013 11:38 PM

Coen would build if people buy.

I hope not ! I'm still a fan of the boats and the history of Superboat .
I would love to see you yourself go in there and build a boat by yourself without the help of anyone . It could even be a 16CC . Start to finish , You grew up in that shop and you should be able too . You do that and you have my respect and my blessing . But for god sake quite talking so much $hit all the time .......

Now that FX10 is here and no longer the internet voice for Superboat that leaves you . Look at the example your setting and the way your carrying yourself . Your hiding behind a BS name when you should be representing your family brand . And all those people your talking trash too could be potential buyers . And your talking about how much better of a person and racer you are . You should be talking about how good the Y2K is and that anybody can race and win in one .
Jr in the end I just don't think you get it and at your age I don't think you ever will . .

POWERPLAY J 03-08-2013 12:05 AM

I want to see another 34. How many were built? Just the one? Looked like a bad ass ride!

OCCJoe 03-08-2013 12:44 AM

there was the white one than Noli (SAW) had with the outboards , the one that had the flames on it and did 100+ and the the one with the yellow and green stripes that Eddie Simmons has now . 3 that I know of . A little old style for me , had some classic lines though if your into that look .. I think the Y2K is the royalty of he SB lineup followed by the original 21 then the 16CC ..
But the 34 is one big a$s boat !

I only know what i've seen on here . 10 of the 34's WOW ! I didn't know there were that many . If your gonna give the members on here the info they are looking for you should request a user name change related to SB so people know who their dealing with .
SUPERBOAT2 or JC SUPERBOAT maybe SuperBoat2013 also you don't live in Brooklyn or Lindenhurst but Lindenhurst would be good on your avatar.

Joe, it has always been a pleasure to talk boats and motors with you, I wish you had your Y2K when I had mine, the chats would have been at much longer length. I am also very glad to know my Friend Rick (FX-10 ) is in your company, a great guy and One Of the best Builders on the Planet. You and you alone are Keeping the Superboat Threads alive !!!! As for Mako 25, I am reading his coments, can't quite figure what he is talking about, could be Crack or Smack !!!:lolhit:

I'm in ! I would just as soon come hang out with ya'll then go to any poker run . . .
Noli I wish I had a gopro mounted that day . Ten minuets later all hell broke loose . I drove through it . It was wicked bad , I had the right tap all the way down and the boat was straight . 26 boats turned over and three people died within 45 min .
I didn't find out how bad it was till I got to the house . Sixty mile an hour winds and gust of one hundred .
Lesson learned , Next time I'm anchoring and not gonna try and run .
