24P Bravo, too much port roll

1 Attachment(s)
I'm posting this here because you guys have a similar hull and beam as my 24' Pantera:

Could only turn 5000 RPM, still had the port tab over 3/4 down (see picture) If I raise the port tab, the RPMs and speed start to increase, but the boat really rolls left bad, almost uncontrollable. Also if I trim up at all from full down, the nose starts bouncing all over the place.

I have checked my drive for play. . .None

I have checked the trim limit spacer. . .its towards the transom

I have tried (5) different styles of props . . . all roll boat

I am at wits end and am getting really disappointed....any other ideas before I give up?

Dave M 08-28-2003 05:28 AM

I get some roll to port when I am coming on plane. I guess that is normal for RH rotation. Once I trim up a little bit she evens right out. Every now and then, I think it depends on the way the tide or wind is blowing, I will have to use an unordinary amount of port tab as you explained. Are you saying that this happens all the time?

Do you have 650HP? If so, something is definitely wrong. I have a 454 mag (385hp) and I turn a 26P bravo a 5K, sometimes a little more when it is cool out.

Hey Dave,

Post a picture of your boat from the stern. I think his k-plane is mounted real high.

Here is my boat:

Here's a pic of my setup. I don't think that is the problem though. You shouldn't need tab just to keep your boat level unless it is a weight dist. issue (re:fat ass passanger!). I usually only use tab for rough water ride. Sometimes if the water is low and I need to get going fast I will use them.

Pat McPherson 08-28-2003 08:04 AM

Dave,
Did you have a leaning problem when your steering was on the blink?
Kirk, I think his name is Kirk, has the same single ram add on steering as you. Could this be part of the problem?
The guy I bought my boat from added the twin ram when he put his 500+HP engine in. 650HP is allot for such a small boat.
The previous owner of my boat would set the K-planes with a straight edge at neutral before making a speed run. Told me he would only trim with the drive. 85mph at 5600rpm with a 26 Bravo I.

Dave M 08-28-2003 08:13 AM

My steering problem turned out to be a severly worn gimbal ring. Before I got it replaced the boat would pull hard to the right when I trimmed real high at speed. I don't have this problem and more.

Pat McPherson 08-28-2003 09:21 AM

Dave is probably right, the K-Plane location should not matter that much.

My money is on a steering problem.

Kirk, I know that you have check your steering, but
your single ram add on system may not be able to handle the power you are throwing at it.
Talk to MM about adding a second ram. At least it will eliminate the cable helm from the equation.

I am by no means an expert, but I have owned and run a few boats.
I had loose gimbles and cable steering on a 28' Cigarette, that boat walk all over the place until we fixed the gimbles and cable helm.
There is nothing like having twin ram external steering. My boat will only go 67mph at best, but I can let go of the wheel even in a good chop, and she goes straight.

Good Luck, You will get it worked out...

Caincando1 08-28-2003 03:19 PM

Pat,
Do you only take transom pics when you have the outdrive off?:D You know they look better without the rope.:p

OK Brian, here is one without the rope...

fastedy 08-28-2003 08:40 PM

The tab does seem very high, that high and you well past level before it can do any good. I have had several 7' beam boats and all have the same characteristic, you may try a lefty and run the drive in reverse.

Eddie Simmons

Elite Marine 09-02-2003 08:31 PM

Tried a lefty, boat was really a handful.

I do have twin rams, just noticed my starboard side leaking a little, could be part of the problem.

No one else has had this problem of rolling on the port side? i do have high HP for the narrow beam, but it wasn't like this last year!

SUPERSTITIOUS 09-04-2003 08:51 PM

Could be the tab setup. I've experienced a few years ago on one of my dads boats the both tabs worked off of one reservoir (bennett tabs I think) and there was a leak in them, the fluid was low. I'd set the tabs , everything seemed ok then the boat would start to lean again. You'd make a turn and the water pressure would push back the tabs.

Elite Marine 05-09-2004 12:15 AM

Back at it

Boats going in the water this week...We'll see what it does with a 27P Mirage, a completely bled sfull hydraulic sterring system and full trim tab reservoirs!!

Dave M 05-09-2004 07:07 AM

Good Luck. I don't care for a 3 blade on my boat. Blowout, chine walk, and less than 1 mph top end difference.

How much did it cost to complete your steering system? You had a add on system before?

Dave M.

Pat McPherson 05-09-2004 07:41 AM

Hey Guys,
I had Houston Prop work his magic on my 25p three blade. The prop does not blow out nearly half as much.

Dave, I think on the stepped, notched 24' Superboat the four blade is definitely better. You don't have any speed loss and the great bite.

On my boat and a 24' Pantera straight V, there is a top end speed loss with the 4 blade. About 2 mph for me, and that 2 mph keeps me in front of my buddie's Fountain...:D

Good Luck Pantera 24-650HP!
Let us know how she runs...:)

Dave M 05-09-2004 08:11 AM

Patrick,

What size / power Fountain does you buddy have? There is a guy at my marina that just bought a '95 27 Fountain w/ 500HP. I can't wait to see him out on the water. I think he said he does 78 mph, I'll just have to see for myself! :D

Pat McPherson 05-09-2004 07:12 PM

My friend Gregg has a 1997 29' with a 415HP/502MPI. It runs 65mph with a light load which is quite good for a boat that big. It is a real dog out of the hole though, it is under powered a bit. Most of the older 29' Fountains had twins. When his engine dies, he will likely go 500HP+.

Dutrasystem 05-10-2004 12:47 PM

Hey Guys, whats going on? I see that your making progress with the Volvo Pat, good luck with her .

I'm finally getting around to changing the Mirage Plus for a Bravo1, should I get the solid hub ? Whats the diffrence?
The Merc web page suggest that you go a pitch lower when you go four blade. Is this the case with stepped hulls too?

I still need to get the 2nd mayfair piston and helm installed, but my guy is booked solid . I wanted to have the steering and possibly ECU work before Memorial Day.

I havent been in yet, I'm shooting for this weekend. I Spent this weekend getting the bike running.

Good luck this season... Sd

z.zuperboat 05-10-2004 01:31 PM

THE MIRAGES ARE ALITTLE PHAT ON PITCH WHERE THE BRAVOS ARE ALITTLE LITE.25 MIRAGE GO TO 26 BRAVO AND 23 MIRAGE GO TO 24 BRAVO BUY THE SOLID HUB AND U NEVER HAVE TO BUY ANOTHER.;)

Pat McPherson 05-10-2004 09:28 PM

Sean, your mail box is full.
ZZ is right, buy a 26p Bravo I.
I run a 25p Mirage plus or 26p Bravo with the plastic hub.
I believe Dave M. runs the same props with solid hubs.
The rule is 400HP, so you are on the edge. Plastic hubs are $20, so you can buy an extra and keep it on board.
I run with a guy that uses the plastic hub with a 454mag.
Could never use one with the power ZZ has though...:D

Dutrasystem 05-11-2004 07:12 AM

How much HP gains do you think the CMIs add? I'm running those on a 454 mag mpi..So if I'm on the cusp I might as well go solid, right? especially if I'm going for more HP in the near future .. The cheapest I saw them was @ $500
BTW, I cleared my mail box - thanx Zup, Pat

Dave M 05-11-2004 07:27 AM

My Mirage + is solid but my Bravo 1 has the plastic insert. www.propellersonline.com has good prices. I think I paid around 350-400 for my Bravo 1. I'm not sure if they come in solid hub anymore. There is a metal insert for higher HP. I think the metal costs another $90.

Dutrasystem 05-11-2004 08:08 AM

I just called Propellers Online they have the solid hubs , but when I told him I was running the 25 Mirage plus , he told me to go 24 Bravo?? I'm dazed and confuzed!

z.zuperboat 05-11-2004 11:14 AM

IVE NEVER DELT WITH THEM ONLY WITH MERCURY RACING DIRECT DENNIS OR BRETT.I HAVE LOST THE NUMBER WELL NOT REALLY LOST JUST FADDED SO BAD ITS NO LONGER LEDGEABLE.ALSO TEAGUE HAD A SPECIAL A WHILE BACK ON PROPS WHERE YOU CAN BY ONE VERY REASONABLE AND IT WAS EXCHANGEABLE FOR ANY OTHER PROP.AS LONG AS ITS NOT HURT AND HAD TO BE BACK I THINK IN 30 DAYS.

I can turn a 26 Bravo 5k rpms with 385HP. I don't think a 24 will be enough prop.

Pat McPherson 05-12-2004 06:42 PM

Hey Pantera24-650HP,
Did you get out on the water yet?

Dutrasystem 05-13-2004 07:08 AM

I'm gonna order the 26 solid hub when they open... Thanx everyone.

Its a great boat, very clean!!!

Let people know please!!

Pat McPherson 05-20-2004 09:31 PM

Re: 24P Bravo, too much port roll

Are you buying the boat Too Old has had for sale?

Your 24 Pantera is one of the nicest I have ever seen.
If you can swing it, put an 1999 or newer stock engine in her. Even if it's just a 310HP/7.4, she'll still run 63-65mph, and they can be had for about $3500.
I can say from experience, it is tough to sell a boat you can't take for a ride.

I think I'm going to try out my Bravo for my next test ride too.
Not going to happen until next Monday or Tuesday though.
My wife is headed to the Cape and leaving me home with our 18 month old.

Hang in there Pat, Its only 72 hours til Monday... My brothers keep busting my balls about selling my boat when I start having kids. I guess your one up!

Countdown til marriage : 181 days!!

Thanks D.sytstem

- NICE PICS, NICE BOAT! She is a beauty. I nicknamed her "WHITEPOWER".(haha).
-I just ordered from West Marine online the "ANCHORSHADE" awning($199.99 plus $30 rebate). Just to provide some shade when I want it while anchored, instead of going with a full blown permanent bimini.(in red)
- Pat
What do you think of making the cabin doors out of 3/4" starboard? I measured everything up(54x24x3/4") $139.99 West Marine. And I'm gonna add another hatch support(had to buy two new ones, JC has none of the shortie's left and doesn't know where to get them anymore). I too never liked the cheap, flimsy 3/8" that he used.

Pat McPherson 05-22-2004 06:43 PM

Re: 24P Bravo, too much port roll

Dutra,
Don't let having kids change the things you love to do. You just bring them along... Then they will love it too.

Hey Bash,
I bought one of those umbrella looking things last year too. It's still in the box. We never took our son out on the boat last year. He'll be going a lot this year though, so I hope the shade works well.
I am not crazy about the doors and cabin hatch either. My thoughts are to replace the hatch with aluminum so you can put your weight on it when climbing to the deck. Don't know if the 3/4 starboard will do the trick?

SUPERBASH 05-22-2004 07:40 PM

24 Cabin Hatch Upgrade

What would be key would be the "step to deck" f.glass hatch"

Dutrasystem 05-23-2004 05:08 AM

Not so good...

Took her out yesterday, I'm not getting all my RPM only got 45/46. It was foggy and rough as a ***** though. After my Bike (Bicycle) Race this morning I'll have to go down and change the plugs etc.etc,. and try again.

Sbash.. I have the Anchor shade, I secure it to the four cleats and I'm done! 5 minutes to set up. It definitely comes in handy...You guess what color... :p

Pat, I dont plan on it, There just trying to bust my chops cuz I'm bringing up the rear slowly... Misery loves company. I intend to keep the Boat, Harley and continue doing Triathlon. Well see... I have to make it to the church first...
Good rest of the weekend ya'll!

Dave M 05-23-2004 05:45 AM

Re: 24P Bravo, too much port roll

I have an Anchor Shade too. They work great.

When I get up on my deck, I step on the passenger seat and then on the dash and over. I try to avoid getting on the deck unless anchoring.

Kids love boats. My daughter is going on 7 and I bet she has at least 500 running hrs. on a boat. My son is going on 4 and he's spent a lot of time haulin ass in the Superboat!
