We dragged this baby into my basement last night around midnight...
It was a deal I could not refuse. :D :D :D

Re: Let The Projects Begin

Cool! How many hours on it? Looks like a 1997 or earlier, no serp belt. Good thing I'm getting more ponies this winter! :D

Pat McPherson 11-20-2004 08:35 PM

Re: Let The Projects Begin

Dave, It's a 1997 with 480 or so hours.
It was still running when we pulled it, but is in need of a rebuild.
I'm hoping it only needs rings, bearings, and a valve job, but we'll see.
I should be able to use the serpentine set up from my Volvo 7.4.
The wife was right when she named the boat "For Now"...
So Dave, I guess you and I will be buying 28p props next year... :D

Dave M 11-20-2004 08:44 PM

Re: Let The Projects Begin

Do yourself a favor and don't run the stock exhaust on that motor. I think that was the demise of my motor.

I just bought a 26P too, my motor broke the first time out with the new prop. Anybody want a 26P Bravo prop, used 2 hours?

Pat McPherson 11-20-2004 09:01 PM

Re: Let The Projects Begin

Hey Dave,
I've got Stainless Marine Manifolds on my 7.4; I'll likely switch them over.
My 26p prop has been worked over a lot during the last 2 years, sand bars, logs, Hail propeller, Houston propeller, vice-grips... So a new prop is needed any how.
I do have a 24p Bravo I with about the same time as your 26p; Anyone need one?
Later,

z.zuperboat 11-22-2004 08:46 AM

Re: Let The Projects Begin

pat keep the manifolds and change the risers to dry.then you can run a real cam.

Pat McPherson 11-22-2004 10:14 AM

Re: Let The Projects Begin

Hey ZZ,
How are things? Did you get out for another run in your baby yet?
I think I'll rebuild the engine stock. I got my balls busted about exhaust noise enough this past summer...
With a stock 502 I should still gain 8-10mph over my 7.4. :D

z.zuperboat 11-22-2004 01:12 PM

Re: Let The Projects Begin

Pat Im tucked away for the winter. All I have to do is backoff the valves. But I still have hope of trying the prop before I order a spacer. My guess for you is about 5 mph over the 454.Whatz up with the noise level in conn.I guess I dont get busted because the boat always on the trailer or the hoist.Im going to be very optomistic about next year.If it sells ,it sells.Im not realy pushing it and if not im going to use the crap out of it.I bought it with 50 hrs and to date now has 101.

Re: Let The Projects Begin

Projects? My new SB needs an interior, been taking measurements......

Dual Batteries, then stereo are in the works. Also adding intercom system for those poker runs......also have to repair a trailer, ack!

Pat McPherson 11-22-2004 03:12 PM

Re: Let The Projects Begin

Hey ZZ,
From hearing you and Jcap talk about needing a lot of bow lift to make those 30s run fast, your going to need a spacer...
My boat ran a best of 66mph with the stock 310/7.4MPI and a best of 70mph after I modified the 7.4MPI. She is running 66-67 with the motor back to stock and the Stainless Marine exhaust.
I am hoping she'll run 75+mph with the 415/502MPI... :D

Krackmeup,
I need to fix up my trailer too. New wiring, lights, fender mounts, and tires if I'm going to trailer down to LI next year...
The interior will have to wait until the following year.

Pat, I think you tinker with your boats more than you drive them. :D Look like some good power for the 24.

Pat McPherson 11-29-2004 06:25 PM

Re: Let The Projects Begin

Cain, you might just be right...
I think tinkering is half the fun. At least when it's by choice...

Do you fellows think I'll be able to keep up with Jcap if we bolt this baby in my boat?

Re: Let The Projects Begin

The engine is a 1995 Merc. 525sc that has been rebuilt with .030 over flat tops and World Products heads. I would guess it makes about 550HP. She came out of a 22' Donzi that ran 90+. It has about 20 hours since the rebuild last year.

I'm just messing with you Dave, it's my buddy Gregg's engine. He bought it to replace the 502MPI that I'm rebuilding for my boat... :drink:

Re: Let The Projects Begin

Brain,
My 310HP/7.4 Volvo is still in the boat at this point. As soon as my 502 is rebuilt the 454 is coming out. I plan to use the serpentine belt set up and a few of the accessories from that motor...

wwwTOPDJcom 01-26-2005 11:14 AM

Re: Let The Projects Begin

I though you bought a 7.4 mag from the guy in Virgina
this volvo 502 or what I like to call a poors mans HP500 runs great
it runs right along side a friends 25 outlaw with a efi500.

Re: Let The Projects Begin

Brian,
You are only a camshaft, roller rockers, and ECU remap away from a HP500.
Maybe some blue paint too... :drink:

Well, I had 74-75 with 385 HP. With 425, I'm thinking 77-78? I was turning a 26 Bravo at 5K. I'm probably gonna need a 28 now.

Yup, I was going to get it from the place up in Wall, NJ that advertizes in the Salty Dog. They have the best prices I've seen. My local dealer was only about $250 more so I figured it wasn't worth the hassle to go get it.

Cool Place In Wall Nj, Before We Went With Superbabi, I Was Going To Upgrade Baja With A Bigger Motor. The Place Is Like A Supermarket. How Old Is Your Bravo ?????

Dave, Perhaps A Good Time To Do A Rebuild On Bravo ?? To Go Along With New Found Hp. Gain...

Pat McPherson 01-26-2005 07:19 PM

Re: Let The Projects Begin

Hey Brian,
That spell check thing always screws up on me.
The 502Mag/HO comes with stainless intake and inconnel exhaust valves standard.
If you use the ZZ502 cam you do not need to change the lifters or springs. If you go with the true HP500 Crane stuff, then you do need to change the lifters and springs.

Hey Dave,
Looking sweet!!!!!!!!!! :drink:
I sold off my 24p and bought a 28p. Now if I can only find the time to rebuild my engine...

OK guys, seeing Dave's new engine has helped motivate me the last couple of nights.

Re: Let The Projects Begin

Hey Engine Gurus,

We pulled this baby out off my buddy's Fountain because the oil pressure seem to be dropping all season... :(

Then it would not maintain oil pressure at all after a hard run. It showed 30-35psi at 4000+rpm then would drop to below 10 when you pulled the throttle back...

She is just about stripped to the bare block now.
I can't find anything wrong with this engine so far. All the bearings look good; not even one scored surface...

Could it have just been the oil pump bypass???

Tripps, Zup, anyone... Ideas please...

Dave M 01-29-2005 07:47 AM

Re: Let The Projects Begin

Pat, Can't help with that question. That's why I went the route I did.

It looks like my install is having a few issues. I'm probably going to have to cut some "semi circles" off the deck at the transom to accomadate the exhaust hoses. The risers on the 496 are higher. Also, I am going to have to raise my hatch a few inches. I had a feeling that was going to happen. My old motor was right at the top of the hatch. How do people fit carbed engines in there? They seem like they would be higher than a MPI motor?

Re: Let The Projects Begin

Hey Dave,
Maybe it's time FX makes us 24SB guys a new hatch too.
I wouldn't mind loosing the sun pad for nice flat glass and gelcoat.
My sun pad is either flying off at high speed or getting dirty for climbing into the boat...

I looked at the hight difference between the Merc MPI and a high rise with carb. Not much difference. I have not had a good look at the new 496 though...
I wonder if JC has put one in a 24 yet?
Probably not if JMK's 24 was the last I/O built. You're the ginnipig (sp)...

Dave, may I suggest that you look for some real flat angle (15°) elbows to go between the riser and tips. I hate cutting into fiberglass...

Hey Superbash,
Remember I have worked in pit crews... :p
By the way, my 454 is still in the boat. I could bolt the drive on and go... :evilb:
We'll be ready May 1st on way or another... :drink:
