20ft Resto.

Hey guys, Recently picked up a 20footer. Needs help. It was an I/O that someone threw a OB bracket on it. The transom is rotted along with the stringers. Oh yea and the Deck. So i decided to make it my Fall/winter project. Took the bracket off monday morning to find the old Drive hole. So instead of crawling around i ripped the deck off. Which only took about 15 minutes. Its missing its windshield along with the engine hatch. Am i out of my mind for restoring this???

Nope, I don't think so..... It helps you become one with the boat... Hopefully it doesnt take you as long as it has me..........
Here's my build thread....

Here's the thing
when your done you know exactly what you've got
a nice solid hull!

Sure you could probably buy a fairly nice one for 10k easy enough but it's still somewhat of an unknown

dba900 08-18-2010 09:51 AM

Hey, you could always ship it to Rich Jr. in NJ and have him re-do the whole thing! :lolhit:

dba900 08-18-2010 09:52 AM

Actually, that raises a question. I thought the decks on Sutphens were glassed to their hulls. Is that not so?

lucky strike 08-18-2010 04:15 PM

Cool project, keep up the good work.

Im not too sure. This one looks like the decks been off before, for some patch work. So it wasnt glassed. However we also own a 30' so ill have to check that one out as well. Thats the only reason im doing this boat over. To have sorta like a mini me.

It will be great if you duplicate this boat to look like your fathers. "HIGH LIFE"

Thats what I was thinking... He he.. :)

30ctsutphen 08-20-2010 09:09 AM

So that's why offshore speed and ski was so successful in the 80s free kilos with every boat!
Lol

Seriously though are those for boyancy?

blackboat 08-21-2010 08:16 PM

Sweet ,Nice project, keep us posted on the progress .

krisx125 04-12-2011 05:18 PM

Well its been a long while since i posted. However im back at it! Got all the stringers out, well most of them. Transom is almost out. Just working on it here and there when i find the time. Man it feels great working on this thing! Hope its worth it in the end. Had a few set up questions even though im a while away. I have a 454 with very low hours on it, was thinking of using that and an alpha. It will be a stock base for now with gil exhaust. What will this thing run? mid 60's? Will post pics tomorrow!

Base 454 (7.4L) with a Bravo will run just over 70 mph with a worked 25 Mirage.

30ctsutphen 04-13-2011 12:43 PM

I have buddy with a 502 fairly cheap, low hours! Knowing him hes probably got a drive for that thing kicking around too.

blackboat 04-13-2011 01:17 PM

An Alpha is going to be the weak link with a torquey big block in it.
I like a Bravo Drive with a shorty lower unit

A 383 stroker motor with that Alpha might hold up if you babied it a little. or even cooler a Blackhawk drive.

Thanks but Ive got a few 502's and some bravos...But i really dont want to go bigger than a 454. The 454 i have is all ready to go. We have a 1970's 23ft formula and we ran a alpha and a 454 and squeezed low 60's out of it lol.

krisx125 04-14-2011 08:52 PM

So spent a few hours on it today, remved the gas tank..and cut some more stingers out..While doing this i was a bit concerned about the hull..It seemd water logged..And didnt seem like it had a wood core. Well i drilled a little hole..And found this:
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7281275_n.jpg

It sucks its wet/rotted...But i guess it better than grinding all the glass from the bulkheads down. When i cut the top layer of glass out it all comes right up! I thought i had more pics of the rotted core. But i dont.

Here's some transom and stringer mess:
This is right after yankin the tank out.

http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3712829_n.jpg

So tomorrow im going to cut EVERYTHING out and start from a bare all glass hull. Do i do what they did and use plywood as core? Or should i balsa core it?

TeamSaris 04-18-2011 04:49 PM

Id use balsa...vaccum bag it if you can. Post this on Scream and Fly that seems to be the place for core discussions. Foam is an option as well...your doing a hell of a job

krisx125 04-19-2011 02:53 PM

Thanks man...I think im in to far to quit now lol. I just REALLY hope its a nice and fun boat when its done.

30ctsutphen 04-19-2011 08:59 PM

Its a sutphen 20 they are fun as hell!

I loved mine , It was a little small for LI sound but for the river it kicked AZZ!

krisx125 04-19-2011 09:21 PM

Ill get some more pictures soon..Its been rainy and lame. The next real question i have is what do i do for a windshield? I cant find the original glass and track. So do i build a fairing like the new ones?

No.... You have Dad's 30' dash to pull a plug off of . Then
paint it the same color scheme ... :evilb:

krisx125 04-19-2011 10:48 PM

Haha, we're actually thinking of making a mold of that race dash..

Should i really copy the old mans paint scheme? I've been thinking about it..but that boats paint has changed a few times. Dont know which to use.

J-Bonz 06-02-2011 10:32 PM

Any Updates?

krisx125 07-17-2011 09:13 PM

krisx125 12-05-2011 06:39 PM

Hey guys, Going to start on this thing again. I have been beyond busy. When i go to re-core the hull what will keep it from losing its shape? Any tips/ideas? I have a little more wood to yank out first.

SUE C Q 12-07-2011 09:20 PM
