The OLD MAN"S Sutphen is ready to fly!

Well boys...after many hours over the winter, Jeff's old boat is
finally ready to go. My son and I took it off the stands and onto a
brand new Venture 5225 bunk trailer on Saturday and finally was
able to fire her up outside. All I can say is that it's AWESOME!
Had to change the P/S pump and custom made the pressure hose,
got a real nice original trim pump, and lots of misc. wiring to get
her back in shape. Buffed the underside and only have to do the
sides this week. It's off to Maine Thurs. night...I'm keeping my
fingers crossed that all goes well. Hope to have photos to post
after the weekend. I'm not sure if Rangeley Lake is ready for
this one...I do know it will be the fastest and loudest fishing boat
they have ever seen! LOL. Hope you all have fun and safe 4th of
July. George

Happy to hear shes back in shape ater 2 owners who did nothing but make her worse. It ran like a top whne I had it and as far as I know nothing has been done to it.

So with the power steering pump change and the original (proper) trim pump that boat should be very reliable and fun. the engine has almost no hours on it maybe 10 or 15 at best and its been sitting for a long time so take it easy on her at first give her some tim eto warm up and stretch her legs because shes just really getting out of break in now and theres probably no molly lube left on the came etc.

If you can throw some new oil in that has alot of ZDDP I only run that in my older enegines. Joe Gibbs race oil has alot. theres also a valvoline race oil that has it.

Beyond that all I can say is enjoy it and send me pictures!

Hey Jeff...just a quick question...does the gas guage work? Not
sure how much gas was in it when you were done with it. How
many gallons should I figure for approx 1 hour per run? Thanks
for a reply.

30ctsutphen 06-29-2011 08:02 AM

It worked when I had it but that was probably 5 or 6 years ago now. I used to go out for a 6 hours day on driving all day non stop for about $65.00 at $2.50 per gallon.

So with a little math you can probably figure that out. I never went out for an hr If I tookm that boat out I ran it til it was empty.LOL

THe owner after me said there was a rats nest of wires under the dash( old radio wiring) and took it all out, Hes also the one who did the Merc trim pump on a volvo drive so god only knows whats hooked up and whats not.

He owns a car dealership so I figured He'd be OK mechanically but after seeing that boat on the last trailer I wasnt so sure.LOL THat thing was way too small and the bunks were turned on there sides to try and make it fit UH it was awful.

My trailer was ugly Ill give it that but it worked great and was rock solid towing anywhere. All it needed was a good coat of awlgrip and it would have been like a new trailer. IT actually FIT the boat too!

Thanks for the info Jeff. Gives me a good idea what to expect. I
know we won't use it as hard as you did...we are all looking forward to the weekend. I just had some custom made SUTPHEN
decals today and put them on tonight. At least the Mainers will
now know what they have been missing all these years on the lake. LOL Have a great weekend and I'll try to get together with
your crew one of these weekends in July. Be safe...George

So with a little math you can probably figure that out.

So you'd run around "all day non stop" burning only 4.3 gph? If so, I'd say you did pretty good and should have never got rid of that boat... or at least that engine! :D

Old Man, congrats on getting the boat running! Looking forward to seeing it.

30ctsutphen 06-30-2011 10:20 AM

The math doesn't lie! I could put in at Haddam meadows run it all day without stopping for lunch or anything significant and be home at the end of the day on$65.00. My ski would cost me $35.00 for the same ride

Of course those who know me have seen what time I get my boats in the water too lol

Volvo 290 is a rare drive Jeff, an oldie but goodie....

When the boat goes in the river at 4:00 PM , and then drives around "all day", I can see 65.00 for sure! Thats all day to Jeff!

30ctsutphen 07-01-2011 08:55 AM

It was more like 1 PM lets not exagerate.LOL

innerrage 07-01-2011 09:42 AM

i run a 290 lh aq with a nose cone awesome drive

30ctsutphen 07-01-2011 10:48 AM

They are pretty tough drives they just sap a little extra HP to operate kind of like a dana 60 compared to a 12 bolt chevy but the longeveity to me is worth it.

Thats how the boat was built too left hadn drive with a 290 the guy was a big slalom skier or something and thats why he built it that way.

Original owner was from glastonbury Ct I think
Richie knows the boat

OLD MAN 07-04-2011 09:52 PM

"unreal!!"

Well boys...all I can say is that that little 20' is one running mother! I took my son, daughter, nephew and his girl friend out
tubing on Friday ($28) and skiing on Saturday ($40). We ran it from Rangeley to Oquossoc faster that it would take to drive on
Rt 4. Just incredible...what a great running little boat. My friend
Kevin who lives on the East shore said he could hear me all the
way to Oquossoc and when I pulled up to his dock on the way
back, he said...I had a feeling it was you all along! I have a few
issues to deal with...but everything is fixable. Have only a few
photos out of the water...was going to take action shots on Sunday
but got rained out. Will try to post photos soon if I can get my
son to help me. Hope to see you all at Walt's on Wed. George

30ctsutphen 07-05-2011 09:27 PM

Ill be at walters and I want to to see pics!

Told you that boat was a CHEAP DATE! In fact you should name it that!.LOL

Its a great little sutphen.

SCOTTY read those numbers and weep! and thats at todays gas prices!

I am really happy to hear your enjoying the boat, makes my day really.
