38" Dominator

Can anyone tell me about this boat in general? What the difference between it and the current 40' boat?

BODYSHOT1 07-09-2002 04:50 PM

I'm going to take a guess, and say they're pretty much the same boat w/o a swim platform...

same as calling the 26 "2700"...the 30 "3200" etc..etc...

probably just a marketing-thing...???

Remember guys...I said it was a guess!! ;)

SinkorSwim 07-09-2002 04:56 PM

Well I hope to let you know tomorrow

I am going to try and call Sutphen tomorrow.. hopeully they will let me know.

bob 07-09-2002 11:14 PM

If I'm not mistaken, the 38 Dominator had the flat deck, more of a squared windshield. The newer deck on the 39-40 I believe is a few inches taller and is a "bubble design". There may have been some interior changes incorporated also. Probably the bottoms are the same. I have a 39 and I believe my glass measures 38'. Great rough water ride! Holds it's own on speed also!

local CT boat..
started with Zul power...
may have been the brochure boat....
we have more pics...

Jons 06-13-2011 09:22 PM

Where are the pictures.

30ctsutphen 06-13-2011 10:36 PM

I know that boat really well, It was the brochure boat from what the owner tells me, It is a painted hull and I think it had a black stripe originally and its got purple and red now. At first glance I thought that was the brochure pisture but its not thats john running the boat and it does looke like its a newer picture, (damn I phone) It was also one of Kenny mischs' boats and at one time had very big power as I remember.

It has a purple and red sutphen on it, and it has a small area of damage to the right side where it got into a piling at claudios not a big spot but its there, the owner is a mechanic and works on it as needed. Its got little issues like the silent choice doesnt work because a rod hangs up on the through hull area.(super simple fix)

It has twin 502s that seem fairly stock and reliable to me, had a bad manifold last season and was repaired and it went out after that for a few runs to LI, so it all seems to be fixed and running fine last I saw it.

Needs to be cleaned up in the bilge area, but everything for the most part works and it goes out often. It was kept next to our boats for years and has been used on a regular basis, the interior was redone recently and I really like how it was done, the seating has a ton of cushion in it and is comfortable as hell. (id have mine doen by the same guy)

The trailer was pretty nice as I remember, It was one of my top 3 or 4 boats I was looking at when I bought mine and for the Money IMO you cannot go wrong with this boat.

If your looking for a super clean original boat its probably not for you( sea2jet would not have been a good match) LOL
But if your not afraid to live with some minor flaws and put in some elbow grease for a lower "buy in" to the sport this is a great ride!

SS930 06-14-2011 03:13 PM

Sure looks like John's boat to me too. Jeff covered it pretty well. About the only thing I'd add is that it has TRS drives and overall the boat seemed mechanically sound last time I saw it. It's not a "10" by any means, but it's a solid boat that can likely be bought for a decent price (< BIN $). It is a great riding boat, I was super impressed with the ride when I was on it years ago.

ChristianGott 06-14-2011 07:53 PM

Does anyone have a number to call, if it's still John's?
I had his number when the boat was nextdoor to OP, but it has been misplaced.
I have tomorrow free, and would like to go take a look.
If the owner is viewing this, call me 203 687 6688.
Thanks,
Chris

SS930 06-15-2011 07:57 AM

Christian,

I believe John still owns it, at least he did last fall. I'd try contacting him through the ebay listing if I were you...

30ctsutphen 06-16-2011 04:34 PM

did you try Gregs outboard service at the number above? I know he has Johns number and hes a good freind of mine so he will hook you up Im sure.

lucky strike 06-16-2011 04:54 PM

i got through on ebay, so no...however, I haven't heard back yet...peculiar?...I'll try the other numbers tomorrow.....must be inundated with offers...

30ctsutphen 06-17-2011 02:32 AM

My take on it has always been that John doesnt REALLY want to sell that badly.

SS930 06-20-2011 08:06 AM

I think John has been "selling" that boat for years now... If it's on ebay, it sounds like he's ready to move it. Any news Christian?

ChristianGott 06-20-2011 08:30 AM

Just talked to him today, have to go to Portland to pick up a new used Alpha upper (had a little issue yesterday), and he said I can stop by and check it out in Old Saybrook on Tues or Weds. Just need to call him first...I want to go through it, etc slowly and quietly...we'll see.

SS930 06-20-2011 10:24 AM

I'm glad to hear you touched base with him. I didn't know if the boat was still in OS or not at this point. He's a pretty straight up guy and mechanically knows his stuff so having him there might not be a bad thing, just let him know you want to go over it with a fine tooth comb ahead of time so he knows what to expect when you meet... The boat needs a little TLC, but overall it's in decent shape given the age and usage.

GL!

ChristianGott 06-20-2011 06:42 PM

Thanks Scott,
I agree, we talked about if we did our own work or farmed it out...I'm sure he and I'll be able to come to an arrangement if and when the time comes....

anyone ever deal with Affordable Marine?..i need an Alpha upper, 1.5 or 1.47 ratio, regular rotation....gen 1 M/R...

c

Sutphen guy 06-20-2011 10:31 PM

Christian,

I have a brand new one with a damage lower, it's been in the back of the shop in a merc box for a while, I will dig her out and check the ratio for you.
