Default My new to me 1972 18' Gran Sport "Super bee 3" Starting rebuild, Any tips?

Bought a 1972 18ft Sutphen that came with a 340 "super bee 3" engine. Engine has been "rebuilt" once before. I bought it in pieces. Has 360 J heads not sure if it's a forged crank or cast, Edelbrock 'street tunnel ram' manifold with two Holley 600cfm carbs (vacuum secondary’s). Not sure what cam was used.
Never rebuilt an engine let alone a marine engine so any help would be greatly appreciated. Have most parts on shelves and in the process of cleaning/paining.
Just got the block on stand and ready to clean by hand. Low budget all the way (I’m a blues musician) Previous owner said he had it cleaned by shop but it looks dirty to me. Any suggestions on what to lookout for or any cleaning tips? Oil/ water passages, gasket services...

here are a few picks

thank you,
Damon

Congrats on the purchase and good luck with her. You will likely find some help with the 340 engine rebuild and assembly in the Technical Section.

I wonder how that would be with a jet.

Go to any home improvement or hardware store and get air craft stripper. It comes in a gel form that you apply with a paint brush, let it sit, then get it off with a wire wheel or brush.
Wear eye, hand and overall protection. It'll eat right thru jeans, shirts, etc.....
That'll get it down to bare metal. Then wipe everything down with prepsol before prime / paint

Wow! Nice boat. I had a '72 18 Gran Sport for 22 years. Really great boat.
Couple things I'm seeing...Looks like stock interior pattern. Hull and deck look pretty "true" from the pics. Rub rail looks stock (shoebox fit, not glassed together). I out a Volvo 290 on my boat and she performed flawlessly for another decade. Ping me if you ever wanna sell. Thanks for good luck! Dave

Quick update,
been cleaning, prepping, rebuilding parts. Block, crank, heads... lots and lots of elbow grease
Next on list. Measure cylinders, order crank and cam bearings and have valves and valve seat ground. I want to keep engine and boat as original as possible.
Will post some pictures of my progress as I go.
Having fun and learning a lot!
