Dumb but still safer than riding on the front lounge seat of a pontoon boat that’s doing 60-70 mph.
Grew up riding the rail of my dads 23 foot slick craft back in the Early 70s when I was 5. Rule was bowrail stanchion between our legs . Dad would be just over planning speed and it was calm with no other boats around. Usually a run out on Lake Michigan running back home to grand haven.
Much safer than being out on my dads 48 foot sailboat heeled over at 30 degree in 6-8 footers on Lake Michigan.
We always had quality Stearns life vests on as kids but we would have been dead from hypothermia before my dad got back around to pick us up.
First rule of going out on a boat . Don’t fall out of or off the boat.
