New 2005 Sutphen 210 Bowrider!!!
I'm currently having a 2005 Sutphen 210 Bowrider built. Yes you read that correctly...a BOWRIDER! Three years ago I would have kicked my own ass for mentioning the word bowrider but after having owned a 22 Talon with 300PM, it became evident that I needed a performance boat with a more family friendly layout. 99% of my boating is inland lakes so I was looking for a 20' to 22' boat. No offense to the west coast offerings but I wanted an east coast bred boat. After searching and talking to many builders it just so happened Rich Sutphen Jr. had been planning on retooling his classic 20' design. Rich and I talked over several weeks and came up with the new boat design. The major features of the new boat are:
-The classic hull and running surface (variable to 20 degree deadrise) is being extended to a true 21'. Remember this hull was an original design and not a splashed Challenger or Shadow. -The deck will be a totally new design. Tapered from the bow. Adding approx. 2" in height amidship to the transom. The fairing will be molded into the deck as will a base for Zero Effort style throttles. -Available in I/O or O/B (no transom well). -The O/B version will have the rear bench area moved aft almost 12" to open up the cockpit and still retain a usable sun pad. -The walk-thru bowrider area will have seating and storage with recessed stainless grab rails. The classic Sutphen profile will be retained. -After this bowrider project is complete. Rich plans on making a second closed deck version or Sport version. -Base price for the boat with the 225 Pro XS or MX-6.2/Bravo is approximately 38K. Dealing with Rich Jr has been a real pleasure. He was willing to entertain outside ideas and doesn’t have the “my way or the highway” mentality. Please give him a call with any questions at (973) 770-8400 or [email protected]. Sutphen Performance Boats is located near Lake Hopatcong, NJ. |
Re: New 2005 Sutphen 210/Outboard Bowrider!!!
Congratulations, please keep us up to date on the progress of your new boat. I've always been a huge fan of Sutphen. Do they have any rough sketches of the new hull and the deck? Good Luck. Kirk

No sketches yet. They will be extending the hull mold first. Then pop the bottom and work off it to make the new deck. Roughly the new deck will be similar to the larger boats with a molded fairing. They are going to produce sketches with my paint scheme which I will post but it will be awhile.

Re: New 2005 Sutphen 210/Outboard Bowrider!!!
Just an update;
The new mold for the 21' hull is being prepared for this build. This process should take a week or two. |
Re: New 2005 Sutphen 210/Outboard Bowrider!!!
Ing, Any word on the progress of the mold?

Re: New 2005 Sutphen 210/Outboard Bowrider!!!
The build has begun as of 04/12/05. Gel and first layers of glass are in.
Fri, 04/22/05, Coring near complete. Wed, 04/27/05, Coring and stringers complete. Hull should be popped from the mold in a day or two. Fri, 04/29/05, hull was popped from the mold. No blemishes! No problems! Now Richie is working on the new deck design and mocking up the new deck plug. Should be a couple weeks of work. I hope to post a few pics soon. |
Re: New 2005 Sutphen 210/Outboard Bowrider!!!
Got a look at the progress yesterday, Wed, 05/18/05.
WOW! Anyone who is a fan of Sutphen or boats with the classic offshore look, are going to be blown away when the new 21' is done. Can't post pics yet. Rich is about half way done with mocking up the deck plug but you can get a sense of the new lines. Sort of a mix of the twenty footer on steroids and a baby 32'. |

Ing,
Can't wait to see the pics. I took my 1981 20 footer out for its first run of the year last week. Runs like a bear, you are going to love the stability of these boats. What are you going to do for power? Mike |
Re: New 2005 Sutphen 210/Outboard Bowrider!!!
A Mercury Optimax 225 Pro XS. 87 Octane with 3 Star CARB rating. I told Rich I wanted at least 65mph GPS with two adults and full fuel. I guess most 20's rigged with similar power are seeing over 70mph so with the extra weight of the bowrider I should see my performance requirements.
Nice boat you have. Next week you should see some pics of a 1979 twenty they just rerigged. It looks awesome! |

Re: New 2005 Sutphen 210/Outboard Bowrider!!!
We have had our Sutphen 18 ft for 10 years now it's a 78 with a 235 OB Johnson and we love it alot. Is there anything Richie Jr might be able to tell us about our boat and we'd like to pick up some Sutphen patches and decals but can't find any. Thanks Paul and Dawnie Walters, Battle Creek MI

Re: New 2005 Sutphen 210/Outboard Bowrider!!!
Paul, Give Richie a call at (973) 770-8400 but I bet his father has the records for those older boats in Florida. Richie's company, Sutphen Performance Boats in NJ will be coming out with some new promotional stuff soon. I know from his father's website that Sutphen Power Boats is also planning on releasing some stuff. The Florida contacts are SUTPHEN POWERBOATS, 923 SE. 13th. AVE, CAPE CORAL, FL. 33990

Re: New 2005 Sutphen 210/Outboard Bowrider!!!
The deck plug is making slow but steady progess. Instead of taking shortcuts and squaring off many surfaces, Rich has retained the curved surfaces on the stern hull sides above the rub rail. It takes meticulous measuring with trail and error to get the lines just rite. Rich is laying out the dash area now.
Once the dash is complete the plug will need final finsihing work with the bondo area. Once he sprays the plug I'll post picks. The project is behind schedule and won't be complete for this season. I visit the shop two or three times a week and although it's disappointing that I'll miss this season the finished boat will be worth it. This thing will be like nothing else on the water. I had entertained the idea of going to I/O power but I'm going with my original plan and the 225 Pro XS. |
