That is an early #3, not a #3A. A #3A has a "crescent" type of lower gear case, similar in shape to a "crescent" #3. This a picture of a #3A with the "crescent" style lower gear case. Notice the difference in the case from the bullet nose on how it sweeps upward, versus how this early #3 is almost vertical

#3a's have a bigger shaft and are none for taking a ton of horsepower 900-1000 no problem (pictured above)......a #3 speedy also came with a cresent lower and the way mine is , smaller shaft but still took 750 hp with no problems...I never needed the spare and the boat in now in new zeeland....Make offer or find me a project to put it on.....
