Unfortunately at less than 25 hours the motor blew...don't know what gave up...tech pulling the engine to assess the damage. Likely will need new bottom end/block, will see. Engine was no problem until then. Wondering if even though the oil pan held 13 quarts if when running hard it was getting enough oil...usually showed 60 psi or so, except when throttled down quickly from a hard run when it would drop very low. When problem occurred I had just hit a big wave and gotten a little airborne, which Donzi's should and can do, but just wondering if should do something different in the oil system for the re-do... Thoughts?
I had the other motor in question installed in my Donzi this spring, and as andylohr (my tech) mentioned, the thing blew with 3-4 hours on it. I was running at ~3000-3200rpm and she shut down / came off plane like someone turned the key off. With some throttle I got her to fire up again, only to hear a nasty racket of $hit flying around in the motor/bottom end. Scoped and the thing is totally destroyed.
Pretty much killed my season, but Andy has been good about the situation and upon discovering this thread it's nice to know that he's as surprised/pissed as I was to learn that they had both blown up.
My big question is.... who goes to the trouble of rebuilding the thing without servicing the bottom end (if that's indeed what happened?)
oledawg - how did your boat run? I had a 24' Black Widow and this motor wouldn't turn anything larger than a freaking 3 blade 23p 14-5/8" Mirage (1:1.43 King Cobra) - no balls. Felt closer to 350hp to me.
