just an fyi, but it appears these manifolds are the cast iron ones. You can see the rust on the bottom of the exhaust runner. They are still much nicer than the old style iron manifolds. I assume merc went from aluminum to cast iron on the 496 because of durability issues with the aluminum ones in saltwater. Just speculating.

Early manifolds were aluminum. Around 2004 they went to cast iron. The risers were stainless regardless. My 9/2003 built motor has aluminum. Stick a magnet on them and you'll know what you got.

Simple test with any magnet . Never seen 496 motors with cast iron . Manifolds

Cast iron maniold casting numbers are 866178XXX with the last few being A02 or T01. The aluminum manifolds start with 863. I will confirm the rest of the casting when I get home tonight. From all the reading I've done on this topic, Merc only used the aluminum during the early years of the 496 before switching to cast version.

863127-C is the casting number for the aluminum manifolds without the water rail.
