How do you know the forums are profitable? A lot operate at zero or negative profit for one reason or the other.
i know many car forums are profitable...i used to have a hand in one and they did quite well...operating costs are minimal

just doesnt make sense.

Must make sense to somebody. Didnt IB just sell for 640 million ??
taking words out of context doesnt help your argument...a website can be sold and bought for millions based solely upon domain name and nothing else. it has nothing to do with the current sites business model. if the site receives a certain number of visits per day...then the value of the site is set.

Many car forums have 20-30 times the active members this one does.

And you have no idea the irony of that minimal statement

Alec means IB the company, which owns hundreds of forum sites sold for big bucks, they have a pretty good grasp on their business model.

irony of what minimal statement...like i said, an investing company does not care about the current business model of the site they are overtaking...an investment company is interested two things:

1. visitors per day
2. domain name

end of story. the new investment company will develop a new business model for which they will execute dependent on analysis, models, and growing trends...are you still following me here?

i agree with your statement but there are more than plenty advertisers and boat products sold worldwide to accomodate a niche forum such as OSO...Even so, with reduced participation comes even less mainetance and operating costs.

I have been on OSO since 05 I was also involved with another site for a while.OSO is by far the best with number of members and information. It is also the largest cross section of people in one place that I have ever seen.Don't take offense to this but one of the reasons that this is a pay site is to make it only for the people who want to be here, not the pretend boaters that alway know someone that has a boat that is better/faster ect.
Is the information always correct...no but welcome to the real world but the amount that is is well worth th 50 bucks or whatever it is.

I just don't get the argument. It's like someone going into a bar, not planning to buy a drink and then complaining that there is no toilet paper in the bathroom. Just sayin'

What about butt gaskets? Is it okay to complain about none of those?
