Blaine, Wash. - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers apprehended a 32-year-old Surrey, British Columbia man registered to participate in the FAST program for smuggling into the United States more than 200,000 tablets of ecstasy Wednesday night at the Pacific Highway port of entry in Blaine, Wash.

Jasbir Saran was driving a 2005 Peterbilt commercial truck manifesting a shipment of toilet tissue when he was selected for an intensive examination and referred for an X-ray inspection of his cargo. During this inspection an anomaly was detected by the officer operating the X-ray machine. Upon closer examination three duffle bags were located secreted under boxes of toilet tissue, opened and discovered to be filled with multi-colored ecstasy tablets.

“This is a significant interdiction as last night we prevented approximately $2 million worth of this illicit drug from reaching the streets of our country and poisoning our communities,” said Service Port Director Margaret Fearon. “Our CBP officers will continue to maintain vigilance in safeguarding the American public while facilitating the legitimate flow of trade and travel.”

Ecstasy is the street name for the drug Methylenedioxymethamphetamine abbreviated as MDMA and was classified as a Schedule I drug in 1985, meaning it is deemed to have no medical use and a high potential for abuse. Under a United Nations agreement it has also been criminalized in most countries in the world and the long-term health effects from abuse of the drug are generally of concern to public health officials.

The FAST driver was immediately taken into custody by CBP officers and turned over to agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement. FAST is a trusted traveler program that facilitates the entry of prescreened, low-risk commercial truck drivers who have undergone a background check. Once the applicant is approved for FAST they are issued a new photo identification card for use at the land border which meets the new requirements for the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative to be implemented June 2009.

LOOKS LIKE WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO CANCEL SATURDAY NIGHTS PARTY
