Alot of dodge 518/618 auto transmissions don't make it to 100k due to bad cooling system checkball design in cooler lines.
Its a good thing not everyone bothers to take better care of their trucks or I'd be broke :D ,Smitty

Wasn't too tough. I installed a tranny temp gauge, and I watch it. Never gets hot. I also change the fluid & filter every 20k miles. On the last checkup, the tranny looked great inside. That's with towing hay trailers with LOT'S of hay on 'em. Don't really want to know how heavy... :D

That can run upwards of $1500 for a reman. I would say you would be safe spending at most 12k for the truck if everything checks out ok. I sold my 2001 with 50k, 4x4 auto loaded quad cab for 22k about 4 months ago and average black book on it was 19k. If you figure the truck you are looking at is 2 years older with over 100k miles, then I would guess 10-12k would be safe. Check the Turbo Diesel Register for more information. That is the place to go for Cummins info. Good luck.

The lift pump is a very common problem on all of the B series Cummins, I just recomend to my customers that they change them every 75k, if it fails and you don't take care of it it will take out the injection pump. The lift pump is easy money to change yourself it's just 2 notls and 2 lines. It looks just like a mechanical fuel pump and thats all it actually is. You can get it at Napa for about 90 bucks.

I grew up in PA and worked at a tiny garage that had a couple trucks we plowed with, it tore them up pretty bad, that is my 2cents.

The automatics break often(I know as i rebuild them) but back to the original thread if a guy doesn't mind alot of shifting a 6 spd cummins would be as rock solid truck as any others, sorry to get this thread off track,Smitty

Not a problem thanks guys. That was my first though when I drove it. It really seamed that I had to shift alot. So the 6th gear is that just a bigger overdrive or are all the gears different from a 5 speed.

Also no one seems to be tossing out any numbers. Do you think 12k is too much? I think I can buy it for 11 but I don't think he'll go any lower. I told him 10 and he wouldn't take it.

As for the plow he used to own a local business here. Mostly he just plowed that lot. He did not have the time to do any more than that and his own driveway. I know the guy personally and it has been well taken care of.

Thanks Rob

If you can get the truck for eleven grand, I don't think you would have too much in it. Sixth gear on a six speed and fifth gear on the five speed are roughly the same ratio. The reason the six speed it more desirable is because it lets the truck work in its most powerful RPM range without any dead spots. I have owned both an automatic, 5-speed and now a 6-speed. I personaly like the 6-speed the best. I like having more control over how the truck operates and since I tow through the mountains of east Tennessee, I feel it will hold up much better.

If you can buy that truck for $11k you should! Thoes things are like gold here in KS. I watched more than 5 go, at auction for over $14 with more miles.

Did you take a look at the front suspension components? I used to run a plow business up north.
With 110K miles, you NEED to check the front end on that truck. I know you said it was used to plow a little lot but plows do tear things up quick.
11K sounds good especially if it's rust free.
