If you have a GM truck look at this PDF file from GM Upfitters. This is a guide for companies that buy just cab and chassis for fitting truck bodies and custom work. This is the real towing capacity of GM trucks. You can find you chassis number on the drivers door.

I'm sure Ford and Dodge have the same type of document

Ok, let me try again, this is a joke, don't get it confused with hatred. SH is still a pompous azz.

Back to a towing question. All the manufactures will always rate a truck with a higher tow rating if it's a fifth wheel or goose neck, whys that? I know the attachment is probably at a stronger part of the truck, but a 4000/5000# difference?

put a 1000# tongue weight 4' behind the center of the axle and compare that to putting 1000#'s directly over the axle.. its a nice statics and dynamics question... :D plus the mounting point puts the weight and the cg of that weight nearer the center of the truck making stopping, turning and weight capability much better.... the leverage of the trailer should never be underestimated, another reason why a longer wheelbase truck always works better than a shorter one... controls the trailer that much better..

Re: What do you tow your 35+ ft. boat with?

Good answer, I'll buy that. What about most boat setups though, tongue weight usually isn't that heavy compared to the actual overall weight(10% seems to be the standard, but boats seem to be closer to 5%). If you were buying a truck rated at 12000 reg, and 16000 w/fifth wheel, would you feel comfortable pulling a 16000# boat with that truck? And believe me I am not referring to my truck..

Re: What do you tow your 35+ ft. boat with?

i have pulled both fifth wheel and conv tow at 12k plus (not boats but other trailers), give me fifth wheel everytime... there is a reason why semi's are fifth wheels..
