In mfg. tow ratings you have to also look at different options that affect the rating ie@ cooling system, transmission, suspension etc. Most ratings are with the factory hitch platform (receiver), but if changed to a Putnam or Curt that rating would rise. Also if aftermarket builders put in a larger cooling system and trans cooler that also will affect the rating.

I tow my 288 w/ a 01 5.4L F-150 super-crew. Upgraded 12K hitch, 15K ball, forged 12K ball mount, upgraded coil over shocks. Fords tow rating says 7,500, I figure the boat/trailer gas fully loaded weighs in at 7K, w/ 475lbs tounge weight, it tows fine and I am right at the limit but a 250 w/ a diesel would be ideal and I would feel better about what i'm towing.

I had a blow out on my 2,000 lb jet ski trailer and the truck was all over the place, I couldn't imagine a blow out on the trialer while towing the boat, nevermind the truck while towing..

I have to agree L.E., while you feel you are doing what you need to do and willing to accept the risks,, what about the other people on the road w/ you ?? god forbid you killed a member of my family while towing 4,000 lbs over your tow rating..

A new tow rig is slated for the spring. I'm done towing for this year. All is not lost, I have seen the light. Amen.

if your truck is rated for say 10k, and you upgrade your hitch to a 12k or even 14k class IV hitch, would the insurance company stand buy your new hitch rating, or your vehicle rating?

How about if your Gross Vehicle Weight on your registration is say 8000lbs ( non commercial vehicle ) Now hook up to your boat, what ever size it is and you are over your GVW. Will you be covered by your insurance in the event of an accident? I think that is the question more so than vehicle ratings. Go easy on me I'm a slow typer :D

The vehicle. The only thing that can change is:

If your vehicle/stock hitch is rated for 7K WC and 12K WD; and you swap to a 12K WC hitch, you are good to tow up to 12K with only a weight carrying setup.

your registered/tagged vehicle rating and the manufactures rating need to match up, otherwise whats the point if you buy a dually and put 6k tags on it (the truck will wiegh more than that....)... and i have seen people do that to save 20 bucks a year... here in missouri we have a choice of 6, 12, 18 and 24k for non commercial vehicles...

the hitch thing, i know some guys on here have called their manufactures to do that, i don't know what they got in repsonse, whether it was a letter or what.... (like my PSD ford came with like a 9k hitch.... now has a 15k one even though i would never even come close to towing that...)

with yout 15k hitch are you good to tow up to that "technically" with your insurance? And what about tires, i got a new set of Alcoa rims for my truck and with that came a different size tire, i belive they are a 235/85
