Bigger is better, go with a 600.
Im a skidoo guy so if I had the chioce. If its a Renegade 600SDI id go with that for sure.
You will love it, be sure to share the pics with us when you get back.

Re: Snowmobile advise
Not on a 500 -600. My Thundercat gets to about 125 mph or so, but that is a modified 1000cc with about 185 hp, and my twin fuel injected ZR 800 does about 105 - 110. Even though you have never done it before get the biggest you can. You will get used to riding it pretty quickly and if you are on a dog you will wish you got bigger. You might see the mid to upper 90's on a 600 maybe a little more, but the rental sleds are usually pretty tired and high milege. They run fine, just not as good as like new. I rented a 500 a few years ago in Idaho and it would do 65. I was bored to tears at that speed, but it was nice riding.
Have fun, it's addicting!

They will both be fast enough to Kill you if you not careful. S#it happens fast on a sled in the trails. If it is yor first time riding the the 500 will plenty enough sled. the newer 500's will run around 90mph and the 600 will run around 100. but in most cases you will not get to use the top speed unless your on a lake or a road, something hard packed. Sledding is a new adrenaline rush. Its probably my favorite drug.
It all depends on how the rental company has the sleds set up. They might only run 70.

You will have a blast no matter what you are riding. The only time you would have a issue is if you are riding with people that have much faster sleds. I rode with Biggus and some other guys that have ZRT-800's and they would DUST me. Then they would waite for me to catch up at intersections and I was riding on a Indy Trail. It is a BLAST!!!

Re: Snowmobile advise
I had my Dad's Polaris 600 up to 95, and my Arctic Cat 600 up to 92 (and that was with a shot engine). It's all going to depend on where you're riding (like stated above, lake, etc.), if the sled is studded, how big the motor is, and hopefully they won't be governed.

Don't need +100 mph on your first time... Trust me, you would be scared to death! 500-600 will have plenty of power for your first experience 70-95 mph's in a Skidoo trail IS FAST!!! Take pics and post them when you're back. HAVE A SAFE TRIP!
