We Ohio residents are often blessed with visits from motorists from the great State of Michigan. It never ceases to amuse us.

We have a joke here- What's the only thing that scares a PA driver? A Michigan driver.

I had a coworker tell me of getting pulled over in Ohio once while he was not speeding. The officer wanted to search the car.

When asked why, the officer replied "You have Michigan plates and you're not speeding. You must have drugs or something on you"

My favorite is the guys who go out and buy the big heavy pickups and then go to walmart and buy a 6000 lb slide in receiver hitch and the lightweight balls. Lets don't forget that link between the truck and the boat.

What does this get registered at....17500....or the gross cary weight of 26g....I will be towing a 46 skater...and big skater trailer....i thought you register it at max weight if it said so and you need to....which would be 26g??..others say 17500...but then i will be over weight .....i say 26 g..?????

Anything up to 26 g is the proper registration.....

byrd, with the garbage trucks always reg more than you have too to avoid the over weight ticket.. with the boat and trailer, just get the max weight, with gear and fuel, and reg it for that.. im sure it will only tow your rig, unless you are using it for other towing.. anything over what you will be using it for is wasting your money.. work trucks are different, you never know when you will be overweight.....

I asked my neighbor that just got into the towing business. they told him to make it 25950 to avoid all the cdl issues. He found out by just walking into a weigh station and asking the police there. they were a great help and answered every question

Your manufacturer's GVWR dictates what your vehicle is registered at. Under 26,000 is non-CDL. 26,001 and up is CDL. They're going to assign it's registered weight to what the GVWR is on your paperwork. This doesn't apply to an RV or to a non-commercial bus which is considered to be an RV.

Also, you can't register a vehicle that is rated 26,001 and above as a non-CDL vehicle. USDOT prohibits any changes to the Mfg. GVWR.

Interestingly enough, DOT limits a non-CDL driver to a loaded trailer not more than 10,000#. I'm afraid to ask if non-commercial's are exempt.
