Upgrading my 05 1500 Crew Cab 4WD to an 06. I have the 5.3,my dealer suggests the new 6.0 Max. This is just my dailey driver,I don't tow much,we have bigger trucks for that. In 12000 miles I have averaged 16.9 MPG. Can't really see why I would want the Max for just a driver. Comments?

Clay Washington has one. He had an older 1500 with either the 5.3 or 6.0; not sure. I'd ping him for his opinion.
The old 6.0 was not worth a crap. The new Max is supposedly a different engine altogether.

Ive got an 06 vortec max 4x4. The engine code is LQ9(345 horse)Escalade, SilveradoSS. The 6.0's available in denali's, and HD trucks is the LQ4(300-325 horse). The LQ9 has higher compression, diff pistons, hydraulic rollers. It is a very nice motor and pulls very hard with a custom tune(i got mine from pcmforless.com). The motor ups the towing capacity of the 1500 to 10k lbs. I pull an H2X every weekend and wouldnt change a thing. As for MPG....14 ish club with a slightly heavy right foot.

I'd wait for the 07 1500's, believe they will be out this fall.

The older 6.0 is a POS slug. I have been looking to upgrade my 02 Avalanche with a 3/4 Ton. I was looking at it from all angles, I want a diesel and I am testing other options. My boat weight app 7000 on the trailer. I tired pulling with a 04 2500 with a 6.0 what a POS, my 5.3 in the Avalance has alot more power. I could get it to run a consistent 70 on a flat high way without running the piss out of it. I have decided on the diesel, now I have to find one in my price range. On a side note, the big block is not very impressive either.
Not trying to bash anyone who owns these engines, just my .02 on the ones that I have driven.
I would be interested in a report of the new 6.0 new someones tries it out.

I believe the 2500 Avalanche is going away altogether. Check with your Chevy dealer or www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com
I had a 2002 Avalanche 2500 with the 8.1L/4/10 rear. LOVED the truck. Tows 7K lbs. VERY WELL. Tows 10K lbs. great. Tows 12,500 adequately.

Like i said, ive got the "new" six in my truck. Even though it has been available in silverado ss and escalade trim for some time. MIne is 4x4 with a 4.10 (14bolt) rear axle and the 4l70 trans. If you are going to get a half ton...vortec max is the only way to go.

I think I have narrow my choices down I have a 04 F350 Lariet Crew cab long bed with a 6.0 PSD in my drive way right now . I think I am going to make the switch to the dark side if my father in law and I can come together on the numbers. I told him he better sharper his pencil!

I used a chevy w/ 5.3 to pull my boat once (only once) it struggled. My new truck with the 6.0 has no problems.
