I had a CJ5 "back in the day" with the AMC V8 and the 3 speed trans on the floor. The H patern for shifting was reverse top left and first gear bottom left. When you got stuck you could "rock it" back and forth to get out (or dig in deeper)

I love this Jeep but I am just ready to start a new project and my "better half" says that this one must go first... Which she is right, as I don't have a lot of room for multiple Jeeps.
