Trailer tool box

Can anyone recommend an Aluminum trailer tool box. Have looked at the ones made by United Welding Service in Fld. Also would like to know if they can be mounted directly to the outside of the trailer frame or should brackets be used to mount them for additional strength? App. size would be about 3-4 ft. long. Not planning to carry an excessive amount of weight in the box. Manufacture recommendations and app. cost would be appreciated.
Thanks

Try Pro-Tech boxes. Search on web or I have a guy here.

Re: Trailer tool box

Our Manning had support brackets (1" square steel tubes) welded to the frame and through bolted to the box.

Depending on the size and guage metal, the boxes can be $80-$500. Most seem to be in the $2-250 range. Check out e-bay! There is one listed that is 12" x 12" x 32" for $89.

Downtown. can you get me a price from your guy on the 16x12x48 top mount drop down box. After talking to the manufacturer, I priced them thru a dealer in Syracuse and I know they quoted me retail on 2.

It was a drop ship to my adress deal.

460. each Alum smooth or diamond plate
412. each Steel

There would be some extra for drop ship to your house.

Re: Trailer tool box

thanks. They are top quality. I want aluminum to keep the wieght down cause I'm gonna hang them on the outside of the frame of my Eagle with C shaped rods bolted through the back of the box evry 12-18" with big backing washers/plates inside the box. I'm going to put hose over the rod where it wraps around the frame and stand the box(es) off 1/4-3/8 inch or so with rubber bumpers or a chunk of rubber between the box and the trailer the hieght of the frame where the C-bolts are to keep paint abrasion/damage to a minimum.

I like this box too for the price/quality/volume. $600 free shipping. They stock these standard build.

http://www.cpohighwayproducts.com/en...ide_truck_box/

I got a quote for their Rainmaster box custom sized identical to the Pro-Tech...was the same $ as the Pro-Tech.

I wanted a smaller box like the Pro-Tech one on each side, but they are expensive per volume. I guess the one on each side is a mute point because whatever you need any given moment by law is going to be in the box on the other side anyway.

Why do you need tool boxes for a trailer that goes 50 miles a year?

Ive thought about adding mine to my trailer. There are a lot of reasons, and never enuff and i are trailer queens, so a lot more than 50 miles a year.

Id keep all the boat related crap (plus some spares :D) in there.

That was for Rip... He trailers twice a year, once up and once back...50 Miles! I mean they look good, but pointless for him. Unless he is planning a trip?

Dave

trips, and more trailer boating early and late yes. ;)

and even towing short haul I carry all the stuff to change a tire, tools grease gun to hit the spindles after cooldown and before dunk, all that stuff. It's not worth the hassle to be stranded, or have to call for what you need, even 20 miles from home. Tired of putting it all in the back of the truck. Plan on having all that aboard the trailer and leaving it there.

It's called smart and convenient.

found a place that offers the complete electric/over 13" Kodiak disc brake conversion kit for good pricing

easier to accomplish and better performance to boot to go elec/over and just weld my coupler solid than try to replace it on an Eagle as it is welded into the frame.

I'm gonna have this one awhile now and plan on going some places, so I'm gonna put a couple K into the trailer as "preventative towing pleasure". ;)

any more questions Senator?

axapowell 01-19-2007 05:51 PM

Re: Trailer tool box

Nope...er..just one, maybe two. I have regular electric brakes now, does the conversion work for it as well?

I've considered the tool box option as well. Get it all scienced out and let me know what's best.

Thanks,
Dave

its 12x12x36

I looked at my old invoice it was in 7-05 $335.41 & 11.28 UPS.its the same as they build for Myco. The part # is 20-2196w. You can get it made any size you want and also get it made in stainless steel for 25%increase. They are made by ProTech in Tnn. I bought them thru Pinnacle truck and trailer. Try Randy 615-793-9890.They dont stock this box they make to order and drop ship them out of Tn.

Hope this helps

heres some more picks, I also made these plates for suport on the inside bolts

Re: Trailer tool box

I have shopped evry box on the market. Amazingly enough, per each particular aluminum finish, they are within dollars of each other per cu. ft. There are no stunning deals.

So it's really about what size you want and if you want drop down or top open, and diamond, raw smooth, or polished finish.

did those boxes come polished Rob?

There is a little more variance in steel box pricing.

the best price in steel for a box that isn't the common underbody semi-truck 18" deep (stick out too far and need too much support) is from...

BuyAutoTruckAccessories.com

JOBOX (Delta) single lid dropdown

36x12Dx14H 247.95 67lbs. Black or white
36x16Dx14H 255.95 76lbs. Black or white

free shipping

12deep by 14 or 16 high is ideal for outside frame mounting

axapowell can asure you I've researched these to the nth degree. :D

the highway products box I linked to earlier is the best buy per cu. ft. in a smooth aluminum polished box, if you can do the 72" Length.
72x12x14 polished for 599.95 free shipping, and an excellent rep for quality and warranty.

second choice would be the Pro-Tech's like Robs for a 2 sided install but they = $770 + shipping

if the price hasn't gone up since his buy. When did you buy them Rob? and again did they come high polish or raw smooth?

Downtown's got a Pro-Tech "guy"...maybe he could get his guy to arrange a drop ship group buy discount for 10 boxes of choice?

Downtown????

I can get exact cost if you're further interested. Or you can call Steve at Best Truck Repair 262-392-2220. Just mention my name Dave Brown. He mounts our lift axles and dump bodies on chassis. Pro-tech makes good stuff.

My question is don't they get all wet when you dunk the trailer? Not sure I'd want one.

They came polished, sameprice.I bought them 7-06.I am sure there is prob a price increase in the alum? When I bought mine the quanty price was 275.00 each.Myco wanted 540.00 for the same box back in 2005

I looked at some 14" high boxes .On my Myco it would stick up or hang down.the 12 worked better for me .

Hopefully Downtowns guy can hook everybody up!!:D

Mine doesent even come close to the water,Most of the time its still over the concrete ramp ,but the shorter trailers might ?

nice use of the race car tie down strip......I always tie mine down with extra rope 9 cheap insurance)

Rippem 01-21-2007 01:48 PM

Re: Trailer tool box

absolutely Dave. I would prefer the smaller boxes one on each side as that is somewhat more convenient, and obviously lend themselves to staying dryer as they aren't as far back on the frame as a say... the 72 I'm considering.

the 48" Pro-Tech for example is ideal though, as 36" can be a little tight for some handles and accessories.

I figure I'd mount a 12" H box split difference( 2" of box above and below an 8" frame) for appearance, or even bias the mounting another 1/2 or1" high for ease of use and the likelyhood of staying drier, especially the drop down door models.

I doubt a 36" or even a 48" would ever get wet mounted on my rig.

even the 72" doesn't quite go to where my frame bends to go straight back and that point or just alittle more is as wet as it ever gets for a launch or load, other than the quick dunk to get the bunks wet or to make the boat winch into the stand easier depending on the ramp.

I think unless you DO drill drain holes in the back corners (I wouldn't, or I would and use a plug) some portion of the box would have to be underwater for awhile to seep in as the quality drop door boxes lids close pretty snug on the weatherstrips

and certianly the top lids pretty much eliminate the water inside potential

Ron Manning is building me an aluminum trailer for my new 32 Sunsation Dominator SS. I asked him to put a toolbox on there and he quoted me a 30"x19"x19". I understood the 30" dimension as I am shorter in length and also have a mounted spare. I also thought I would like the height however, you guys have me a bit nervous with your dimensions...thoughts?

He has 1 picture of a mounted toolbox found at http://www.manningmarine.com/images/31.jpg - does that look like these same 30"x19"x19" dimensions?

Me personaly I dont like a bulky looking box, for me its to tall.I also dont like diamond tread. looks cheap to me. Again thats just me and I am alittle weird, anal and worry more about looks:eek: Remember I am the person that polished (mirror)a alumiun I beam trailer for my Scarab:drink:

Just think of what all ya might put in it??? if ya need it that big? I bought one at a time , filled it up ordered another filed it up and could use one more .I figured it might get in the way when loading the boat...... But I am use to Drag racing carring spare everything and intisapate breaking something or even someone else thinking what someone else might need.

Remember theres a lot of people making diamond tread boxs.shop around.

looking at the pick someone will prob be leaning over the box winching the boat up the the v block unless ya power load.

alot of the dimond tread tool boxs like goes in truck are clear coated and after 3 years turn yellow, peal, but some are not cleared .

Make sure what thickness it is if ya want to stand on it.When I load mine on ,its hard not to stepp on it.

hope this helps

Rippem 01-23-2007 04:51 PM

Re: Trailer tool box

IMHO 18" boxes, or in your case 19" deep box is too big and hard to work around.

I feel the same about diamond tread. I would choose painted steel before I did that. Luckily, I have a black trailer so that does leave the painted steel box option as I posted above.
The problem with that is the wieght of the box itself...

First choice is smooth aluminum, polished or not.

14"D x 14/16"H x whatever length is just about right. It's easier to work around extra hieght than depth.

Thanks guys...that helps. Especially the comment about the winch. I will call him tomorrow and talk it thru...

Regarding what I will put in it, already made a list :);

Trailer – bottle jack, lug wrench, mini compressor, bearing buddies, grease gun, grease, wheel chocks

Boat – tow straps, plug, spare prop, prop wrench, pwr steer fluid, outdrive oil

Misc – bungee cords, rags, chain, adj wrench, wd-40

What did I miss?

I keep my props in the truck. you will need the bigger box if ya put the props in it.

I also have spare hub, bearrings ,break lines for when a tire blows out and takes out the brake lines:mad: ,extra trailer lights ,ball grease , tools to pull hubs off, etc, extra lugs nuts,
