Nead opinions on Duramax.
Looking for a GMC 2500 or 3500 crew cab 4x4. Is their a hude difference between the 3 engines (LBZ, LLY, or the LB7)
My primary concern is noise, I sold my F-250 PowerStroke because of the noise. I now have a 2500 with the 6.0 liter not very happy at all no power and 11MPG around town 13 on the highway. Is one of those engines quiter than the other. Also what can I expect to for mileage from a 2500 Crew Cab 4x4 and a 3500 crew cab dually 4x4. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks Kirk |
I have an 06' LBZ and it is very quiet.......mileage empty on the highway is around 18...towing my 25 Outlaw I get 10.

I have an 06 LLY/Allison setup. Awesome truck. 19 every day, 14 towing 9000 lbs on the I-75 with the cruise control on 75 mph. Does a great job. i came from a 6.o liter to the Duramax. there is no comparison in either power or economy.

had an LLY and now have an LBZ. The LBZ is very quiet at any RPM.

The LLY gets a little louder at around 2700 rpm, this is where the pilot injection changes.

I have a 07 1 ton Classic (old style) dually that I use to haul a 43 Black Thunder. I tow in 5th gear and it will hold 65mph up some pretty good inclines that would bog down my 04 to 45mph in 4th gear. It gets the same milage as the old truck too, 10 mpg towing 15,000 lbs at 65 and 18 unloaded. Get the 3rd gen motor if you can, it's worth it.

Thanks Kirk I towed 14-15k with it and was able to pass traffic easily with power to spare. I would highly recommend the LBZ. For what it is worth, I am selling my 06 dually 4x4 with 14k miles because I got a Freightliner. I have over $16k in aftermarket on the truck. Email me if interested and I will send picutres. I have the LLY in K2500 and I usually get 17mpg . I lost some efficiency when I upgraded tires (one size 265's). Best ever was 24 MPG 95% interstate, empty traveling between 57-62 MPH. Go test drive one and see what you get, the BIGGEST variable is your personal driving habits, as far as noise level I believe each generation is a little quieter. Pulling a 7200lbs trailer a get 12-14, mainly divide highways at 55 MPH and flat ground.

I own an '07 LBZ. Don't let anyone fool you: it is the quietest diesel on the market. I test drove them all when I bought mine and there was no comparison. I actually got in an argument with the Dodge dealer over this. They claimed the Dodge was the quietest, but it was actually the loudest in my opnion, with the Ford in between the two. The LBZ is amazingly quiet for a diesel. I can carry on a normal conversation with people in the truck at any legal speed.
Also, the towing capability is awesome. I tow just under 10k with it and it seems like its hardly working. Trans temps are always reasonable and mileage is better than my Tahoe was towing half the weight. Duramax and Allison rock! :D Check out this recent post for a performance comparison of the diesels on the market: http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/s...d.php?t=164472 John |
