it is a venturi designed to cool the exhaust gasses during regeneration of the dpf filter. check youtube for powerstroke exhaust fire to see how hot they can get.
The reason behind Ford's 2008 Super Duty Truck recall http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEYVjXh1RPM
As usual, Ford is using it's loyal customers to do it's product testing for them

it's also told not to stand close to the exhaust when it is in regenerating mode, because your clothes could get in fire! That is not a joke. It could melt the asphalt!. And another truth, government won't buy these Gm trucks anymore for anything that is related to forest supervision or things like that to avoid starting forest fire... I'm a GM dealer. That is what GM told us. and I'm not kidding! Amazing, is'nt it?

That was the strangest sounding engine I have ever heard. Sounded like it was running on one cyclinder. Every 2008 engine I ever heard sounded extremely quiet. So the GM Isuzu motor is the same way???

PS As much as Iīve been a speaker for diesel engines in powerboats I have to admit that Iīm getting more and more conservative since Iīve started to do marine engine services and overhauls for powerboaters.
Yesterday a 496HO refused to run (I bet my money on the crank position sensor) and I thougth a mechanical fuelinjected BBC would do just as well using E85 to be environmentally friendly...add crashboxes and ASDīs to that and you canīt go wrong in my eyes :-)

programmer will wake them up, but with the DPF system on the trucks it is hard to do turbo back exhaust kits. MBRP has a DPF back kit the works, in a couple more weeks HP TUNER and EFI LIVE will have a way to "kill" the codes associated with the DPF delete kits so then you can kill it all the way back and do what ever like the early gens.
