1998 expedition will not start

I stopped today to get a cup of coffee and when I came out and tried to start the expedition the interior lights dimmed and I heard a sort of clunk sound from the right front. Sounds like it is on the firewall. I took the batter out of my car to give it a try and noticed that while the interior lights go out when you try to start it the head lights stay bright. Still hear the clunk each time from the front right. Any ideas on what to try before I have it towed to the shop?

Your battery cable is either broken off or almost cooked through right where the ring termination connects to the starter. Pull it off, go to a hardware store and find a large grounding lug and attach it between what's left of the cable and the power post on the starter.

So? What did you find?

Starter was shot.

Your Expedit. might be recalled with the Cruise control switch also. These short out and cause fires. Fords briliiant engineering - a HOT cruise switch meaning always power to it.

It happens, but not that often. You should take a close look at that cable. I've seen dozens that have more or less eroded away right at that little flat between the cable ferrule and the ring connector.

Cable was also done
