Picked it up today, this afternoon. Absolutely love it to death so far, as does the wife. The 4.4 has got good power to be a small v-8.....all the features are pretty comfortable and everything works great so far. I got what I would call a good deal on it, I bickered for about an hour over the price, got ready to walk out the door and the sales manager had a change of heart. We met some-what kinda on the low side of what he wanted to do for a deal vs what I was willing to pay for it, plus he threw in a 100% 12 month/12K mile bumper to bumper warranty. I am pretty comfortable for the price I got it for, I did the financining thru my local bank, so I got 6.75% interest for 60 months, but hell I'll trade about every two years or so, sometimes more, so it should be good to go. Waiting for the wife to get here now from work, she is ready to go riding.....LMAO!!

Follow up.........well the driver's side window reg went out already, tech says that normal though, the tightness of the window is the cause for that, no problems other than that though and it was repaired for free.

The drive.......its unreal, I feel as if I am in a dern sports car, which is a plus for the wife. The power......surprising! Tow ability, it pulled my challenger like it wasn't even there, no bounce or strain. I believe its by far the best SUV (SAV for the owners info...LMAO) we have ever owned. I took my 70 year ols parents out and let them tool around in it some.........dad is looking one right now as we speak, it impressed him that much. Overall, I am completely satisfied with the purchase, the wife is tickled pink, so all in all it has worked out great. I'd much rather have this than say a yukon, denali, suburban, or any jeep. The handling is what really blew my mind for it to be a SUV it drives like a car with the ability to tow up to 6,000 lbs it really suits all of my needs.

My wife wants an X5 as well. She currently drives a 540i and I am afraid it isn't going to have the pep that she is used to. I persume the 4.0L is a necessity if you want any type of performance?

We probably won't do anything till the spring, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that the X5 would be capable of pulling jetskis etc.

Also, Is there certain model years to stay away from? Did they fix some of the problems with the later models?

From my gatherings the 2000 and 2001 had a few problems, they were the first years, I hear in 2002 they had all the bugs worked out.......but I would imagine that even the 2000s and 2001s had good ones also or have been upgraded if they are still operating. I have found out its the only SUV we will purchase from now on out, its a hard vehicle to beat.....as long as my money runs good anyhoo...LMAO!!

I haven't tried the 3.0 v-6........but my 4.4 v-8 has plenty of power.

the 540i has a 282 hp 4.4L V8, the 2004-2006 X5's have a 315 hp 4.4L V8...the new x5 is a 4.8 L v8 which has 350hp...so although it is heavier than the 540, in all of the recent applications you get more HP to offset it some...they are fast trucks to say the least

I am on my 2nd X5. I've had a 2001 that had some electrical gremlins but BMW stepped up and fix ed them. My 2005 X5 4.4i has been trouble free except a burnt out light...covered under warranty.

My 2005 X5 4.4i has 43,898 miles and is now coming off lease. It is black on black, sport and premium pkg all optioned out. If you want to buy it let me know. I only have 2 more payments.

I had 140,000 on my 2001 and used it as a work truck, even towing my bat boat across the country to races. Got 10 mph towing at 80mph and the only problem was ball joints. Sold it on Ebay for $17500 and it went to Russia. I guess they don't have used ones and want them badly. Got a Cayanne S now and love it too
