Gmc 2500hd Looking For Tires....

Hello everyone,

I own a 2005 GMC 2500HD Crew Cab, and the original tires that came on the truck are getting tired. I would like to replace them with the original size (245 75 15"rim), or maybe one size larger (265). The tires that came with the truck have always been traction challenged in the rain and snow, but have gave me good mileage and ride on the freeway. They currently have 50000 miles on them.

Any suggestions on which brand/model to replace the old tires with?

Thanks

Are you sure that your wheels are 15 inch, and not 16????

I have the same truck (03)with 105K on it and just put my second set of MIchelin LTX's on the truck. They ride great and I have been thrilled with the performance/ longevity. I moved up to a 265-75 and the truck came with 16's not 15s.

Joe92GT 12-04-2007 08:00 AM

265/75-16s is what you want. BFG all terrain. There isn't a better tire out there.

Slick02 12-04-2007 08:20 AM

265/75R16 Michelin LTX M/S 10 ply would be my first choice if money isn't a problem, other than that Nitto/Toyo A/T's would be my second choice and BFG A/T's would be my third.

This is just a personal opinion/observation.

JMAASKE 12-04-2007 08:35 AM

I went with the Firestone Destination A/T's LT285/75/16 on my 2006 2500HD and really like the ride, wear and road noise level. I can,t speak for traction in the bad weater since my truck only see's sunshine and nice weather, but friends that referred me to that tire drive there trucks all year and are very happy with them. You can't go wrong with the Michelin's but you pay for them.

OSO 12-04-2007 08:50 AM

I got an entire 20k miles out of the Nittos on the same truck.

If you are bargain shopping I really liked my Generals I put on the same truck.

Michelins hands down the best if price is no object.

Slick02 12-04-2007 09:04 AM

And when I took the Toyo A/Ts off of my F350 at 10,000 miles to go to the 19.5s they looked brand new. Go figure. and I've got a survey company that we use the Nittos on and even with gross neglect they are getting the far side of 30,000 miles on them, but then again, they are damn near half the price of the Michelins.

Tires

Stick with the Michelin LTX M/S 10 ply. They are the best tire for traction snow rain or a wet ramp. Have run this same tire on 3 different trucks pulling my 38' powerquest. Just got my new 08 GMC 2500HD and pickup my new wheels and tires today. Couldn't stand the BF Goodrich that came on the truck. Felt like the truck had over steer going into the corners. Will let you know outcome Friday of this week after the son and I mount them. Waiting on lug nuts as I type.

tblrklakemo 12-04-2007 02:18 PM

keeping your stock wheels? I like my toyo terra g's AT

Anger Management 12-04-2007 02:22 PM

sorry folks....they are 16" rims on my truck. My mistake.

If I put 265 or 285's on my truck verses the 245's, is the speedo off by a lot?

Thanks again,

Sydwayz 12-04-2007 02:30 PM

1. Go to an 8 or 9" wide wheel while you are at it. You will see a DRASTIC improvement in handling, braking, and towing stability.

2. Its tough to beat BFGoodrich All Terrain KO tires. Period.

3. 265 series tires will fit no problem.

4. 285 series tires will fit with front torsion bar tweaking, BUT, will also depend on if you go to a wider wheel and the associated backspacing. These really fill up the wheel well nicely.

5. Hypertech and Diablo Predator Power Tuners will change your speedo ratio for your new tires, and have other benefits. Do a search here on OSO; lots of info. Your dealer can also program in your new tire size into your stock ECU to correct speedo and shift points.

Wheels

Going with Outlaw II same as on the boat trailer. Have to keep everything uniform. Don't want to look like a geek going down the road or when pulling into the ramp. Remember its all about looking Good.

Wildman1 12-04-2007 03:10 PM

Tires

Just check tires on new truck.

Tires from Factory are Bridgestone.
265/R70/17 are 31.7 in diameter
265/R75/16 are 31.7 in diameter (note middle #)

speedo should be same if you change to 265. 285 is width of tire. Middle number is height from wheel to tread height.

Jammin' 12-04-2007 03:11 PM

I really like the Michelin XC LT4 tires that Sears carries. They are made for Sears by Michelin. I have the same truck in an '06. I'm starting to put them on my other work trucks as well. Check them out.

BGIII 12-04-2007 03:14 PM

I put Nokian Vatiiva A/T 265/75R16E on my 2003 2500 Yukon XL and I am very happy with them. Might want to do an internet search on them, they get good reviews. Fairly aggressive looking and acting but very quiet compared to the Bridgestone's I replaced.

JMAASKE 12-04-2007 03:23 PM

I believe I am off 7% which is appx 4.2MPH at 60MPH running 285 series tires. Keep in mind going up tire sizes will decrease fuel mileage to some extent.

Keep in mind , as well as the speedo reading low , so will the odometer. Check MPG with gps. I think you will find very little difference. You could also add 7% to your miles traveled before computing milage.

Anger Management 12-04-2007 07:51 PM

I will be keeping the stock wheels on the truck, and I'm leaning on the 265/75R16E tire size. The 245's are too small for my liking, and I really don't want to mess around any more than I have with the torsion bar to fit 285's. I have already had the torsion bar cranked up by the dealer so the front of the truck is a little closer to level.

Innov500s 12-04-2007 11:05 PM

I just put 285's on my 2500 crew cab and they fit fine without doing any changes to the suspension.

Quinlan 12-05-2007 06:12 AM

I had 285s on my 2500. Mich 10ply loved them. Truck sat taller they rub lightly with no adjust on my 01 crew but only when turning to one side. There was 3 to 4 mph diff in speedo at 80mph. verified with GPS and State police!!
Might be why I only got 10mpg with the 8100. Hmmm.

The one constant in MOST of these posts is,,,,,,Michelin.

Airpacker 12-05-2007 07:27 AM

Look at the Toyo open country H/T, the Brigestone dueller Revo and the Firestone Destination. All good tires and decently priced. I have had great customer feed back on those tires. The Michellins tend to go very hard quickly, thus the long wear life but poor traction in rain and snow. BFG's get square if you drive highway speeds alot and don't give good wear durability.

baja bailey 12-05-2007 07:43 AM

With 60K miles on my '06, they don't have time to go hard:D.

Chris Sunkin 12-05-2007 08:38 AM

Bridgestone A/T Revos wear long and handle nicely on that truck, They have a more aggressive tread pattern than the BFG but are quieter. They're even a little rotation insensitive. The won't work on an Excursion though- I tried. The truck was all over the road. Some of these new vehicles are very tire-sensitive. My other Ex has BFG 315-17's on it and does quite well with them.

Most speedometers are off- they all read over. Going to the next size up will probably get you closer to showing true speed... and fuel mileage.

Michelin is all we run on our mediums. They give the best reliability and return on investment. On cars, I'd never buy another one- nothing but trouble, mostly poor lifespan. On light truck, I've never been overly impressed- especially when you factor in their additional expense.

I've never been a Goodyear fan, even though they're the only manufacturer that hasn't abandoned my hometown. Lately I've become a convert- at least on their auto tires. Been getting great results and better life than previous experiences. They're also getting more aggressive on pricing.

never enuff 12-05-2007 04:34 PM

The Mich are one of the best. The MS does a great job and the mileage I got was great 60K(if you rotate and balance them like your suppose to). I now have Bridgestone Revo's(more agressive tread design) and I have never had a tire that was better on wet roads or in the rain. They have 50K on them and they are starting to look like they are wearing. If you want a good comparison of types of tires go to-tirerack.com and check the different tires and look at the comparison charts.

Steel Outlawed 12-05-2007 05:54 PM

I got 65k on the last set on Michelin LTX M/S on a 2500 HD.

Screamin' Seamen' 12-05-2007 07:22 PM

I've had great luck with Cooper ATR. 285/75-16 will fit with minor rubbing but the look much better. Plowing and bad weather I have run STT but the mileage they run is cut in half, but the traction is excellent. I buy these wholesale. If you would like a price PM me. Shipping them to you might make them too expensive. Who knows.

FROGMAN524 12-05-2007 07:59 PM

I'd say throw some Toyo Open Country AT's not the MT's. in 265 of course

Quinlan 12-05-2007 08:13 PM

I have the Toyos on my new 3500 srw on 20s look MUCH better but not near as smooth on the highway. 15k miles and holding up very well.

middle number is aspect ratio....ratio of height to width....in other words the amt of tire in relation to rim.

ezstriper 12-06-2007 07:00 AM

I have the same truck....duramax,,,anyway tried 285 yokahamma's or how ever you spell it....they were horible, tire rack took them back after 2 months, handled terrible, they were load range c's, so stay with the e's running dulap 265's rovers, handle great ride good and are quiet....Rob

PurpleStuff 12-06-2007 11:56 AM

i have BFG 265-75-16 with 30+k miles on mine and they are great. i think i can get 15-25k more miles from them...

obnoxus 12-06-2007 03:49 PM

Michelin LTX M/S on my 2500

tried 285's and was a little to boaty feeling to me.

Back down to 245's and love them.

augie58 12-07-2007 06:35 AM

I have a set of factory take off bridgestone 773 II's mounted on new gm rims, I can sell you the rims and tires, tires only or do an exchange for your rims. Less then 10 miles on them. I live just north of green bay so an easy pickup. 245/75/16's.

augie58 12-07-2007 06:39 AM

I would automatically check the speedo against a GPS. On my '06 GMC when I went from stock to 285/17's it threw the speedo off by 5 mph.

Anger Management 12-07-2007 05:36 PM

Augie58, thanks for the offer, but I have that tire right now and I can't stand them. There could be a quarter of an inch of snow and they are all over the place.

Thanks

I Put The 265 Revos On And Love Them! Great Looks And Really Quite!
