Factory Remote start after the fact

Ok here's the deal. I bought a new 07 Sierra HD2500 back around the beginning of September. At the time I thought I could get by without it but now that winter is upon us here in Cleveland I decided I need the remote start. On the build sheet for my truck it says I have the Remote Start Accomodations Package (AP8) so I am assuming it would not be too difficult to retrofit the factory remote start. I called a dealership yesterday and the service guy didn't know if it was possible and so far hasn't seemed to eager to find out and call me back so that's why I'm putting this on here, to try to get the input of somebody that may work at a dealership that can give me a yeah or nay if this is possible. Ideally I would like to get the new 2-way remote start.

Don't know about the factory one. I did however put a AUTOPAGE RS-1000 alarm in my f-250 and love it. It has a pager that can page you if the alarm goes off up to a mile away. It also has the remote start which works from up to a 1/4 mile away! My wife has a factory remote start on her Mazda and it sucks as far as range goes. I start mine when I am leaving a store or the gym when I am still inside and it reaches no problem. Just thought I would throw that option out there for you to think about.

Call the parts dept. and see if they make a kit for your vehicle. If they do it will be a plug and play deal and should be easy to do.

c-deezy: That looks like the right kit. The factory one is the way to go.

Don't bother with the factory r/s. It won't turn on the heat or defroster!!! Yes the engine will be warm but your azz will still get cold as you scrape the windshield. What engineer designed that piece of crap is shot. The range is another bummer with the factory system. I sell them and have done many in the new truck 03-06 and 07 up with the new lan system. If you have the factory r/s , here is a neat piece to adress the 2 way and range issues. http://www.bypasskit.com/product.asp...XL2230&catid=7

I have a friend that just had the factory remote start added to his 07 Sierra. He had to call a couple dealerships to find one that would do it, but he got it installed and he said it works great.

I have a 07 2500 Chevy LTZ, and it came with the remote start. Someone mentioned that it does not turn the heat on. Mine turns the heat on high the defroster on high the heated windshield washer fluid on, and the heated seats on high.

Here is the GM Bulletin. Hope this helps.

Subject: Information On Adding The GM Accessory Remote Star Kit - keywords entry install keyless receiver #PIT4082D - (12/03/2007)

Models: 2007-2008 Cadillac Escalade, ESV, EXT

2007-2008 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe

2007-2008 GMC Sierra, Yukon, Yukon Denali, Yukon XL, Yukon Denali XL

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This PI was superseded to update Recommendation/Instructions. Please discard PIT4082C.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
The following is additional information on adding the GM accessory remote start.

Recommendation/Instructions:
Vehicles must have the extended remote start option RPO (AP8) in order to add the GM accessory remote start kit. This kit is only available on automatic transmission models. Every step of the instruction sheet needs to be followed exactly in order for the remote start to operate properly. Here is a brief summary of what needs to be performed.

The BCM needs to be programmed for remote start by contacting the Techline customer support center @ 1-800-828-6860 and having them add the remote start function to the VIN number so the BCM can be reprogrammed by TIS2WEB. After reprogramming the BCM, the vehicle will need to be shut off for 1 minute and then restraints ID will need to be setup by using the "Set up SDM primary key in the BCM" under module setup category in the BCM.
Note: Once the remote start option is added to VIN at Techline, the option will always be available even if the BCM is replaced or re-programmed at a later date.

The instructions state that the BPP brake sensor will need to be re-calibrated. This is not true because the 2007 Full Size Trucks And Utilities are not equipped with a BPP sensor.
The Theft Deterrent Module will need to be SPS programmed with the remote start option selected.
Note: Please select TDM in the controller list and not VTD relearn when re-programming the TDM

Clear all codes in all the modules on the vehicle.
Program the new remotes (supplied in the kit) to the Remote Control Door Lock Receiver
Installation Complete
Troubleshooting: Remote Start Inoperative:
If the vehicle is equipped with RPO UK3 Steering Wheel Controls with the Drivers Information Center (DIC), make sure remote start option is turned on in the DIC.
Make sure the Remote Control Door Lock Receiver is calibrated for the remote start option. Most vehicles with the RPO (AP8) should already be programmed for remote start.
Make sure the vehicle has adequate fuel (above a 1/4 of a tank).
Make sure there are no PCM diagnostic trouble codes.
Check any of the disable conditions listed in Document ID# 1689813 In SI2000.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

Thanks for the bulletin JMAASKE, when I called the dealership again and talked to the service department they were like 'yeah we don't do that', until I made it clear I wanted the factory remote start installed.

Then I got it again when they transferred me to the parts department and they were like 'Two way remote start? What the hell are you talking about?'. But they are getting the parts in this afternoon and are supposed to call back and let me know if its what I want or not. Really the price wasn't too bad, $195 for the fobs, $130 to install/reprogram.

You can sell your old original remotes on ebay or whatever and get some of that money back.

Can a remote start be put on a diesel ? I was wondering because of the time needed for the glow plugs .

JMAASKE 12-06-2007 10:22 AM

Out of GM owners manual.

Remote Vehicle Start
Your vehicle may have a remote starting feature. This feature allows you to start the engine from outside of the vehicle. It may also start up the vehicle's heating or air conditioning systems and rear window defogger. Normal operation of the system will return after the key is turned to the RUN position.

During a remote start, if your vehicle has an automatic climate control system, the climate control system will default to a heating mode during colder outside temperatures and a cooling mode during warmer outside temperatures. If your vehicle does not have an automatic climate control system, during remote start, the climate control system will turn on at the setting the vehicle was set to when the vehicle was last turned off.

During a remote start, if your vehicle has an automatic climate control system and heated seats, the heated seats will turn on during colder outside temperatures and will shut off when the key is turned to RUN. If your vehicle does not have an automatic climate control system, during remote start, you will need to manually turn the heated seats on and off. See Heated Seats for additional information.

Laws in some communities may restrict the use of remote starters. For example, some laws may require a person using the remote start to have the vehicle in view when doing so. Check local regulations for any requirements on remote starting of vehicles.

Do not use the remote start feature if your vehicle is low on fuel. Your vehicle may run out of fuel.

The RKE transmitter with the remote start button, provides an increased range of operation. However, the range may be less while the vehicle is running. As a result, you may need to be closer to your vehicle to turn it off, than you were to turn it on.

There are other conditions which can affect the performance of the transmitter, see Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System for additional information.

(Remote Start): Press and release the lock button and then press and hold the remote start button to start the vehicle.

To start the vehicle using the remote start feature, do the following:

Aim the transmitter at the vehicle.
Press and release the transmitter's lock button, then immediately press and hold the transmitter's remote start button until the turn signal lights flash. If you cannot see the vehicle's lights, press and hold the remote start button for at least four seconds. The vehicle's doors will lock. Pressing the remote start button again after the vehicle has started will turn off the ignition.
When the vehicle starts, the parking lamps will turn on and remain on while the vehicle is running.

If it is the first remote start since the vehicle has been driven, repeat these steps, while the engine is still running, to extend the engine running time by 10 minutes. Remote start can be extended one time.
After entering the vehicle during a remote start, insert and turn the key to RUN to drive the vehicle.

If the vehicle is left running it will automatically shut off after 10 minutes unless a time extension has been done.

To manually shut off a remote start, do any of the following:

• Aim the RKE transmitter at the vehicle and press the remote start button until the parking lamps turn off.

• Turn on the hazards warning flashers.

• Turn the ignition switch on and then off.

The vehicle can be remote started two separate times between driving sequences. The engine will run for 10 minutes after each remote start.

Or, you can extend the engine run time by another 10 minutes within the first 10 minute remote start time frame, and before the engine stops.

For example, if the lock button and then the remote start buttons are pressed again after the vehicle has been running for five minutes, 10 minutes are added, allowing the engine to run for 15 minutes.

The additional ten minutes are considered a second remote vehicle start.

Once two remote starts, or a single remote start with one time extension has been done, the vehicle must be started with the key.

After the key is removed from the ignition, the vehicle can be remote started again.

The vehicle cannot be remote started if the key is in the ignition, the hood is not closed, or if there is an emission control system malfunction.

Also, the engine will turn off during a remote vehicle start if the coolant temperature gets too high or if the oil pressure gets low.

Vehicles that have the remote vehicle start feature are shipped from the factory with the remote vehicle start system enabled. The system may be enabled or disabled through the DIC. See "REMOTE START" under DIC Vehicle Customization for additional information. If your vehicle does not have DIC buttons, see your dealer to enable or disable the remote vehicle start system.

Remote Start Ready

If your vehicle does not have the remote vehicle start feature, it may have the remote start ready feature. This feature allows your dealer to add the manufacturer's remote vehicle start feature.

If your vehicle has the remote start ready feature, your RKE transmitter will have extended range that will allow you to lock or unlock your vehicle from approximately 197 feet (60 m) away.

See your dealer if you would like to add the manufacturer's remote vehicle start feature to your vehicle.
