08 duramax vs 06 duramax

I currently have a 06 chevy duramax 4dr 4wd 2500hd w/LT3,bought it new in jan of 06,has 19,000 miles on it. I am considering buyig a 08 4dr ltz duramax, the dealer is offering me a pretty fair amt for trade in (30,000) and I think I can get them to go 31,000 on my trade. I qualify for the gm discount until jan1st when my employer changes names so I only have a few days to decide if I want to get a new truck. I"m pretty happy with my 06 overall but I do like the seats in the new 08's,me 06 has the 10 way power heated leather but they don't tilt back real far which is uncomfortable if your trying to sleep while someone else drives, the 08's do. There are other things I like about the new trucks but my real question here is has anyone switched from the 04 1/2 to mid 07 lbz to the new lmm 07/08 and newer new style chevy? Did you experience any loss of mileage or power from all the pollution control/emissions equipment on the new trucks vs your old truck? Any other qualified opinions or comments on the new ones,They looked butt azz ugly to me at first but I have gotten used to them.,thanks,Smitty

I wish I lived closer to you and it was spring. I'd give you the 33k that you'll get with a 31k trade in at 7% tax. Your truck is the exact truck I'm looking for.

btw.. 04 1/2 - 05 was LLY. LBZ was only 06/07 classic with the 6 speed trans.

CAVelocity 12-27-2007 08:52 AM

Lots of info here: http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/index.php

MPG is definently affected, but how much probably depends more on who's driving.....

they did make some 2006 lly with the six speed Allison, about 4 months worth, Sept-Dec06.

Very little difference in the powertrain from an 06 LBZ to the new style truck, my neighbour has the new one and I have the 06, similar mileage on both trucks. They drive very similar also.

I would not hesitate to make the switch.

Sydwayz 12-27-2007 09:54 AM

He's giving you a good trade deal on your 2006 because they are actually selling for good dollars on used lots; since not everyone loves the new emissions blessed 2008 offerings.

Same thing happened with the 7.3L PSD when the 6.0L PSD came out with Ford. Unmolested strong 7.L PSDs are still highly sought after trucks.

Keep that in mind.

I got offered a 33.5K check for my '06 LBZ Crew a couple weeks ago by a dealer friend of mine. I'm not even looking to sell. He just knows I don't drive it much (turned 4600 miles today-I'll have had it 2 years the end of April), it's red, and I always order all the right stuff.
He said he could make a couple of his customers happy the next day if I'd bite.

I just don't want to start all over again. I keep making out real well as another buddy is a Chevy store manager. I put no cash in and financed 29K when I traded my 04.5 LLY...(which I also had ordered)
These non-diesel types keep trying to say buying a diesel takes 900,000 miles to pay you back for the additional up front $$
uhh...no they don't...

My friend and co-worker has a new one (LMM) and after we serviced it and did some appearance mods at my place a month or so ago, I took it for a good hard "thrashing" :D

I thought it was stronger than my LBZ. Though I run a heavy wheel/tire combo, which that unspung wieght hurts...especially getting rolling/roll-on.

I dunno...what do do ,if anything, either

jeff32 12-27-2007 09:36 PM

pulling with the new duramax instead ofthe old version is much better. a 06 with let's say an hypertech programmer is similar to the new one without hypertech. We then tried the new duramax with a Superchip programmer, and a customer of mine said it was also a big improvement pulling his fifth wheel... I'm sure you can't go wrong! And have'nt heard about a worst fuel economy...

BUIZILLA 12-28-2007 08:32 AM

'06 LLY production ended approx 9-15-2005.... mine was built approx 9-13-2005, my LLY actually came with an LBZ computer... :) no wonder it smoked... ;)

a friends was built approx 9-17 and his is the LBZ

Wish I could sell my LBZ.... Been for sale for a while now.

articfriends 12-29-2007 07:44 AM

Trading it in this morning, the dealer is giving me 32,000$ trade,I could hardl;y pass it up because I bought the truck almost 2 years ago to the day,got the gm discount last time,a 3500$ rebate plus used a 1000$ retire certificate from my wifes grandfather who worked at gm so even with tax it was less then 10 g's to drive the truck 2 years. After the 1st of Jan trw takes over the delphi plant I'm moonlightighing at so I'm no longer going to get the gm employee discount,I might get the supplier discount but not sure of that so I'm pulling the trigger,Smitty

the 06 lly engine was actually a lbz with detuned programing in the computer. The reason some were released with this programing was the lack of availability of the new torque converter for the 6 speed allison, and they made the decision to limit the engine with programing . Internaly it was the same engine as a lbz

The 04 ran 14.97 with old style pre -lly duramax, never ran the LBZ-06 down the strip. Lets put our boats behind our trucks and run-em off out front of my house:grinser010:,Smitty

You got that right. I'm a GM man died in the wool but I'm gonna keep driving my older body style until they build a better looking version or I might change brands. I check my mileage every tank on my duramax and I get just under 18 mpg religiously in all kinds of everyday driving, and get 9.5 pulling a 38' boat on the interstate at 75 mph on mostly flat ground. I don't think the 08's with the new emissions will get anywhere near that.

I agree...I'm a huge Chevy fan but the front of the Chevy HD with those big chrome (plastic) corner boxes are more than I can take....they should have at least made them open up to be used as tool boxes or as beer coolers or something!:(

I will say, the GMC is much better looking and is what I would have to buy.

Wildman1 12-30-2007 10:41 AM

Fuel mileage

Just took delivery of 08 GMC 2500 HD with the LMM engine in it. My old 04 GMC would get 18.2 mpg on the highway at 75 mph. The new one is getting only 16.5 mpg. Now it only has 3500 miles on it but I was hoping with the extra overdrive that the mileage would be better. We are leaving to go to Florida this week so I will see if it improves as we go. But for now I am a little disappointed. I think the old one had that burst of power traveling at 75 then the new one as it seems a little sluggish when you punch it. I think this is mainly do to the overdrive now.
The other thing is the hood you can't see over the right side to judge your distance. The old style Serria Classic had better lines. They should have put the bigger motor and transmission in the old style they would have had a awesome truck.

articfriends 12-30-2007 02:10 PM

I actually liked the looks of my 04 much better than my 06 (other than the cool duramax/allison badges). The 08 ltz's (like the one I just got) with the 17" rims and 265 tires have a much better look then the regular ones with 16" rims. The gmc versions look like fords,I like the hood lines of my new 08 but the body lines do bear resemblence to a frickkin toyota. The 12 way power leather seats are the best thing about the truck, they actually recline far enough to sleep while someone else drives (unlike my last truck),Smitty

A co-worker just bought a 08 gmc,it has bezels on the gauges (my ltz chevy doesn't) that give it a buick sedan dash look,I didn't care for that plus the door armrest are different and jut out right where my left knee rest while driving. We been ragging on him at work that it looks like a super duty ford for past week since he got it too:evilb:,Smitty

I'm a Chevy guy too, but the GMC is definatly a better looking truck. I won't be buying till March or April, so I'll have time to consider both.

I wouldn't base my purchase on the dash bezels alone and I don't have any experience with the armrests but I do know that I don't like the Chevy hood with those black plastic pods up by the windshield and the GMC hood and front grill/bumper are much nicer looking to me....sorry, just my taste.

I would not agree that the GMC looks like a Ford since the Ford has that "sad puppy" look in the headlight area and the GMC does not.:cool-smiley-026:

FRMULTR 12-30-2007 03:47 PM

I don't mind the looks of the Ford, untill it gets dark out and the headlights go on. It seems to look all upside down to me.

I wouldn't base my purchase on dash bezels either, I like the dash that my 06 had better than the gmc or chevy. The guy that bought the GMC wishes it had the black plastic inserts like the chevys have plus he says everyone that looks at it thinks its a ford, there aren't as many new gmc's around here as fords. Personally I drove the 08 gmc 150 miles last weekend snowmobiling which is what got me started on looking at trucks this week,I liked everything about the truck (as far as comfort/driving it) except how the door panel jutted into the side of my knee while driving the truck. I picked up my chevy sat,the door panel is completely different, you can tell they tried to make the GMC look more upscale. Something I dislike on both trucks is the trans temp display is now on the speedometer where you scroll thru the tripometer, mpg readout etc. You have to scroll thru to display the temp instead of having a actual gauge like my last 3 duramaxes and when you do if you want to leave it on then your ave mpg isn't displayed (which is what I usually have on),Smitty

Yeah...it's funny how we wish that one truck has some styling features from other trucks. I had been hoping that the new Chevy HD styling would grow on me over time...but so far, it hasn't happened. That's too bad they did that with the trans temp display...probably saved a few dollars on each truck or they aren't worried about the temp and don't think we sould be either.

I have an '05 Chevy crew cab 4x4 diesel Dually with only 4500 miles that I am going to sell...had a thread for it but it was removed.

No...it was in this section because I'm waiting until after the holidays to place an ad. It looks like they don't allow links to other ads like auto trader...so I'm not sure where I want to place an ad yet??

When I first saw the new trucks with the factory 16" rims they looked pathetic but when I started seeing them with the 17" and 265's they looked better. Another thing I have noticed in the few days of driving my 08 is road grime/salt/dirt etc sprays from the back tires up the side of the truck to almost the front doors,Bushwacker is making fender flares already,I'm going to probably buy some,I bought the factory molded mud flaps the day I picked the truck up but they aren't going to do squat for the spray I'm seeing in front of my back tires,Smitty
I got the clearence lights this time too, they look pretty good at night, never had them before.

My trucks a srw,my boat and trailer is around 7500-800 lbs, race car trailer with a vehicle on it is about the same and covered snowmobile trailer is even less so I don't need the duals at this time. I had a decked out dually back in the mid 90's with 454 and banks kit,it looked bad azz. Had alcoas,2 tone paint, sunvisor, camper shell with big aluminum wing for pulling tall enclosed trailers. It drove terrible in the snow though unless you had really aggressive tires on it and were in 4wd,the duals would climb up on the edge of the tire tracks in fresh snow and toss you around,Smitty

Semper Fi 01-01-2008 03:45 PM

I personally think the new GM trucks are UGLY. I have a friend at a local dealer and he said that they were buying up all the leftover 2007's in the area from dealers (that are now the "old" bodystyle) because the newer ones are not selling well. People are still looking for the older body style.

Rippem 01-01-2008 10:36 PM

exactly Semper Fi

PatriYacht 01-04-2008 07:43 AM

I bought a new 07 Classic GMC because of the styling and the emission laws coming up. I think I'm going to keep this one a while. It is the nicest truck I've ever owned.

Quinlan 01-04-2008 08:44 AM

I went with the 07 classic also. SRW 3500 and my shell and carpet bed liner from my 01 went right in. Didnt even have to paint the shell. Of course this one has the duramax instead of the 8100.
Quinlan

articfriends 01-05-2008 12:17 AM

I have had 4 duramaxes now, a 02,04,06 and now this 08. So far this is my favorite one,it rides the best, has the most comfortable interior yet and warms up the fastest in the cold weather. As far as the gas mileage,I'm seeing the same as what my 06 lbz got,the emissions/dpf scared me at first but If I see worse mileage towing I'm bolting on a 4" turbo back exhaust system and buying a programmer to stop the regeneration process.I bought bushwacker fender flares because I have noticed the 17"/265's seem to throw road grime down the sides of the truck and I like the looks of the factory fender flares on the earlier ones. My 06 was a lt3 with 10 way power leather, you couldn't get comfortable on a long trip or recline the seat back enough to sleep while someone else drove, this on has 12way leather seats, they lay back real far and as gm claims they are definately ultra plush. I'll post pics after I install the fender flares this weekend,Smitty

Rippem 01-11-2008 05:01 PM

they're not making this easy!!

$3250 rebate (in lieu of 0%, but I have 800 credit so great rate is not a problem) ($5000 on an '07 LMM)
$2000 in card earnings
$1000 loyalty certificate (received today)
$10,000 equity (given the number I was offered last month)

invoice - $6250

and I have the 10K from the outright sale of my current rig.

gotta do some math tonight!

jmackin 01-11-2008 05:58 PM

I thought it was $3500 for the 07's lmm's. Did they raise it recently?

Rippem 01-11-2008 06:37 PM

GMbuypower info. I only checked quick before leaving for work. I'll look again.

'07 Classic $5000 (or 0% 60 mo.)

'07 LMM $3500

'08 LMM $3250

I kinda don't get that one, as they are the same frame, suspension, and running gear as the GMT 800 (last gen)?

could be as simple as a better quality shock? (Not hard to accomplish as they have always been junk in the past)

FROGMAN524 01-11-2008 07:03 PM

Maybe the truck weighs more and that is why it rides better. Who knows.
