6.4L PS Issues
Getting ready to pull the trigger on a new F350 (:evilb:) and was wondering if anyone here on the board has had any serious issues with their 6.4L. There are always rumors about "problems" with new powerplants, just wanted to take a real world poll from people that own them.
|
27,000 miles here on my 6.4 with no issues what so ever.
|
Might want to browse through the 6.4 section on Diesel Garage.com.
|
Check www.thedieselstop.com before you buy a 6.4L PSD. Some are perfect. Some have nothing but problems. Same thing with the 6.0L. If you ask a Ford diesel mechanic, he'll tell you he wishes they still made the 7.3L.
|
I'm getting close to 30,000 miles on my F450. Engine has been great, no problems at all. Fuel milage sucks. They say it'll get better at 30,000 miles but I'll believe that when I see it. Still, i wouldn't trade it for any truck of its size out there today.
|
I used to know a guy with an f450 that gets stuck all the time while towing is boat. NOT FUN. Radiator problems along with others.
|
Had plenty of 6.0's in the fam, no trouble, 6.4's as well and some friends that own 6.4's, no trouble. Most modded but see a lot of work use and towing, it was actually the stock ones that had some issues once in awhile, one of the 6.4's had lag issue and surging that Ford couldn't figure out and their flash made it worse, Sparten tune and never happened again and runs better. 6.4's sparten tune and dpf delete all the way, much much better mileage, lower egt's, no retarded regen, and ton more power and torque. Fuel mileage sucks on all the new big 3 trucks, you can thank the dpf and regen for that, the 6.7 Cummins is great and smooth and very well matched to the 6 speed auto, but sucks donkey balls for mileage compared to the 5.9 HO Cummins friend had before it.
|
I have a 08 F450 and it was getting 15.7 coming down the road today. Thats the best i have seen so far and that was 90 miles of driving on it. And i have 22,250 miles on mine.

I haven't had mine reflashed yet, to my knowledge anyway, but I have to take it in for a service bulletin thing so maybe I'll have it reflashed then.

I am at 13.4 mpg...90% city driving..had 1 flash, truck runs excellent. 25k miles and the more I drive it the mpg keep getting better.
|
Saw a 6 door F450 going down the road yesterday. Looked VERY Sweet
|
2 radiators, towed off the freeway twice, high pressure fuel pump, engine electrical short, rear main oil leak, current oil leak....buy the extended warrenty..you will need it. 08 F450 fuel pig
|
I have a 08 F-450 King Ranch with only 12k miles and no problems so far. The only thing is the MPG is terrible. city is around 10, highway 12 other than that its a GREAT truck.....
|
This is directed to Jassman, what rear end gear is your truck? robertjr

Thanks for all the responses guys. What started me looking at new rigs was we recently towed my Cig with a buddies '06 F350 SRW 4X4 6.0. I was thoroughly impressed with the ride and towing. Even got around 17.5 mpg coming home without the boat (according to the trip computer. Probably was a little worse than that).
I've heard reports all over the spectrum about the 6.4's from love to hate. Just makes me a tad nervous when the info is about 50/50 good to bad. Even some of the die-hard Ford people aren't really ecstatic about the new motor. |
08' F450 with 4:88 gets about 8-9 mpg with 52K miles.
Replace the front diff, transfer case, radiator, Fuel pump twice. Been standed and towed at lest 4 times with boat, wide load, not fun. Its for sale!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Probably get one for half of what a new truck would cost. Thats the way I would go if I was in the market right now. |

this 08 is 3.73.. the 07 6.0 was 4.10 |
No problems with mine! 08 F350 6.4PS 3.73 4x4 Crew Cab SRW Short Box. 25k miles 16mpg w/o trailer. Two simple recalls one was to flash the chip for exhaust filter cleaning and one to reroute the radiator overflow. Awesome truck. I would probably pass on the 6.0. If I were to get an older one I would get a 7.3.
|
The early 6.0s made a bad name for that series... The latter 6.0s from 05-07 were pretty good engines, except if you got crazy with a tuner, you would blow headgaskets, and the egr coolers would fail.
The 6.4 is a very good motor, the MPG is a little crappier compared to the 6.0, but thats easily remedied with a DPF delete and tune (turning off the regen). There is also a new flash from ford that increases the MPG on the 6.4, by changing the parameters at which the regen kicks in. If you happen to get an 08, just make sure its a Job 3 truck. The 09s are good to go! (Not to mention the 08+ tow command systems are compatible with electric over hydraulic braking systems as long as there is a compatible actuator installed) Good luck, and I think you will be very happy with the new 6.4L.. |
Early(job 1 build) 08's with the 6.4 had radiator problems and overall the general consensus is the fuel mileage sux but that pretty much seems to be the only real consistent problem I've seen and I watch the www.powerstroke.org forum regularly.

Slick, is there a way to tell Job 1, from 2 or 3? A dealer around here has an '08 dually sitting on his lot and will make me a great deal on it but I don't want to bail off in it if it's a job 1.

If it is a new vehicle, it will be on the window sticker. At any rate, I believe there are recall notices to fix all of the job 1 issues. Replace the radiator and get the latest flash and you have a job 3. By the way, I have owned both a 6.0 and 6.4. The 6.4 is far superior. It is a much more refined engine. Good luck
You guys gonna make the 200 this year? I will be off Friday this year so the fun-run will definitely get an earlier start. Probably have evryone over to the condo later that afternoon/evening as well. Looking forward to it. |

Job # has to do with running changes during production, as said previously the job 1 trucks had a 2 inch front air dam under the front bumper, the job 2 and 3 trucks have a 4+ inch front air dam, and dealers make the changes to repair the job 1 trucks and bring them up to later standards so none of it is really an issue, also the chance of a dealer still having a NEW job 1 truck is slim at best, the production on the job 1 trucks started in the middle of 07 and was only about a 3 month run.
