Not trying to hijack the thread, but I have asked many times about what is legal for towing and have found that most are running illegal. It is almost like the cops just overlook boats unless there is an incident. When you talk to the authorities you get different opinions. I have read the law and the towing restrictions for my state and yet I see people daily and on weekends or holidays that are blatantly not in compliance. Sure makes you question why going to great lengths to be legal when most are not!

kr1276,

Here's the difference in towing your own boat or a regular commerical driver.

The cops see a 38 Cig being towed down the road by a pick-up odds are the owner is driving the truck. He has many thousands tied up in the truck, boat, trailer along with mass amounts of pride - even if he's not "legal" chances are he drives with greater caution and takes less chances because it's his and he loves his life and his boat too much to do drive reckless.

On the other hand you see a ratty tractor pulling a peir box out of Port Newark (NJ) from some little trucking company and the cops know the owners of the truck takes short cuts on maintainance, the driver is paid min. wage, % of truck gross or flat rate for a distance and has driven too many hours, lied about his logs and just plain doesn't care about much at all. If he hits someone - so what the company has insurance and it's not my truck - you can't make me paid for damages and there's not enough drivers around anyway!

Who should the cops stop - the over cautious guy with money or the ticking time bomb in the legal application truck which is probably being operated unsafe due to the driver or mechanical issues the owners choose not to repair?

That is why BIG trucks are pulled over at scales and pleasure boats go right past the cops.
