I had a 2003 3500 srw with the automatic. Truck was fine until i hooked up my 5000lb boat and trailer then the shifts would start lagging. I was always concerned about heat buildup but I never had a problem with the trans. I wanted to install the Gear Vendors over/under transmission but it costs about $3500 and I was always putting that money in the 110gal boat fuel tanks.
