4x4 switch panel as stated above, easy to replace yourself, just pull off the dash surround molding and pull and replace the switch. They all go bad. Eventually it won't engage 4x4 or will stick in 4x4 mode.

I agree, but the problem with mine was just cold solder joints, I resoldered mine, and it has been good for 5 years now

Just wanted to thank everyone here again for the info.
I decided to finally change the 4WD selector switch after my truck twice engaged in 4WD low by itself.
Part was only $90 and I changed it in less than 10 min's. So far so good, no message and no 4wd by itself!

First time mine came on, I was working 3rd. shift, got out of work at 7AM on a friday, and we left for Key West. I had my wife drive, so I could nap, and be refreshed for Duval when we got to town. As we were going across the 7 mile bridge, she woke me up to ask me what the message meant, I looked at the dash, and saw it, and the speedo said 70, imagine locking into 4 low at 70, thank god it never switched over to 4x4, just gave us the message.

It would switch into 4wd when i started it up. The first time it did it I thought my transmission was slipping b/c i was going 30 mph and the tach was @4000. Finally looked and realized it was in 4wd.
