Default NJ to CA how much per mile??

How much is it usually per mile. The boat is in NJ and I'm in central CA. Is it better to go get it myself?

I just bought a boat in Chicago and needed to get it to upstate NY. The dealer quoted me $1.50 mile. I went and got it myself. I figure I saved about $500 by doing that. On a haul from coast to coast, I would think you'd save more than double what I did.

My $.02..

You have to find someone who is empty and does not want to return without a load. That way it works out for both sides. I just did it from LA to Stamford CT. Be prepared to be flexible on the timing. My transporter needed to push out the pickup time by a few weeks and I was able to work around that.

I think a lot of this depends on the type truck and how big/heavy the boat is.

Is the boat on its trailer and someone just needs to pull it? Does it need to be hoisted with the trailer to a 18 wheeler flat bed? Or is there no trailer to begin with?

If you have to use a specialty trailer then the rates will be higher. If the boat is oversized (8'6" or more) the rates will be considerably higher. These are all factors. Fright rates are mystical and a tough nut to figure out. Also a lot has to do with the location within county. For example from the midwest to the east coast the rates can be $2.00-$3.00 a mile but from the East back to the midwest the are $0.90 a mile. Coast to coast is an area I do not have experience with but I am sure those lanes have their issues.

If it is just a simple boat with a simple move then I would try this web site. Even thought I have not personally used it, I have read and heard some good reviews, it is worth a shot and I hope all this helps.

Thanx for the replies. $1 per mile would be ok, but when you start talking $1.50 and up per mile-ouch. I just wanted a ballpark figure. Thanx.

It wasn't that long ago that $1.5 per mile wouldn't touch it.....I remember "good rates" being $2.00 a loaded mile (or $1.00 counting both ways)

$1.00 per mile is about the operational break even point for most OTR (over the road) trucks.

Not touching that $1.50 per mile was also when fuel was $1.60 per gallon!! Now with diesel at our above $3.00 per gallon it amazes me there are even trucks on the road. Most if not all are driving just to pay the bills, like the annual $8,000 insurance bill. FWIW operating trucks is not cheap.
