Which powerstroke diesel should I stay away when looking at fords? is it the 6.0 or ?
I have a 2003 Ram 1500 and in the future I wanted to get me a ford f250 because of the interior and overall looks of the car. My ram has the whole dashboard cracked because of the pos plastic dodge used. I wanted to know which turbo diesel engine is the one that I should stay away from when it comes to ford?

The 6.0's can make more power and are quieter. The 7.3's are stone cold reliable. There are some horror stories on the 6.0's. Some people seem to have had good luck with them some seem to have had horrible.
I have a 2000 7.3. Great truck...... |
the typical line on the 6.0 is
avoid -03 - 04. The 05-06 is better. But, they all have their own issues. If you find one that has good records and the right mods to make them (more)reliable, I'd be willing to buy any of them. Of course as I type this, my -04 is sitting at the shop getting about $3500 worth of work done to it. :angry-smiley-055: |
I have an 05 6.0 that required extensive warranty work. Overheated for some reason and the dealer instaled new heads, injectors, egr, and a few other things. No problems since the repairs. The dealer mechanic told me none of the trucks he did (this was a systemic problem on the 6.0) ever came back to him.
If you're looking for an 02 or earlier then you will get the 7.3ps. They did the change from 7.3 to 6.0 in 03 so you can find a 03 with a 7.3. My advice would be to get a 7.3 as this is a tried and true diesel made by international that would be far less likely to let you down than ANY of the current motors. |
Sandcraft is right. Stay away from the 6.0. If you want a newer truck get the 08-10 with the 6.4. That motor will make big power(500hp) with an intake manifold, an air filter and a tuner.
As to your dashboard problem, if you use a windshield shade, the dash won't crack. |
Stay away from the 6.4 also

The 05-07 6.0 is a good engine. just got to take care of it. get rid of the egr cooler and make sure you have a good technician. the 6.0's worst enemy is a bad tech. thee 6.4 will require more mainintence and has a dpf system. sometimes a little hard for people to grasp but the truck will have what is called oil growth. the truck injects fuel in on the exhaust stroke to burn out the particulate filters in the exhaust. since therre is no combustion at that time some fuel gets past the rings into the oil. the thuck will re-generate about every 300 miles. if you dont complete the entire re-gen it may do it sooner. everyone falls into the extreme service catagorie on these trucks. no more than 5 k on oil and fuel filters every 15k.
the new 6.7 is the truck. re-gens 1/17 of the time a 6.4 does gets good MPG (best since the 7.3) and is ford built. if you are looking used... PM me the vins of the trucks you aare looking at. we will see how much service has been done and what generation they are. |
the new 6.7 is getting around 19mpg at 70 mph.. 3.55 gears..

Remembering that the F450 6.4 with the 4.88 gears got such poor mileage, I'm eager to see what the 6.7 can do with that axle ratio. |
