Were talking light duty diesel here not heavy duty big rigs.....and I said off warranty
To the OP....the things that you typically give you probs with in a diesel are the injectors and injector pumps....when your looking at a truck find out how much injectors and pumps are worth to change out and decide from there. This site is good to find out about individual trucks...to simply say "gas or diesel?" really isnt enough....eg the early Dodge Rams had a great engine with the Cummins but transmissions were weak and couldnt stand up to under any load and replacement was common....big $$$
JS- did you look at that injector change bill? I know an injector for a D Max is close to $400 EACH plus labour....an injector change is usually around $6000?...ouch!....good thing you didnt have to pay it....what is a pump job worth on those trucks?
My next door neighbor's 06? 6.0L Ford in the end had over $35,000 worth of warranty work done with less than 60.000mi on it!!.....he's like 73yrs old , it left him stranded twice just driving around town, just quit....they wanted to pull their Airstream trailer to California but were afraid to. The last straw was a new engine when an injector stuck open, flooded a cyl and a rod and piston came out the side of the block just driving out to his buddies place....he wanted a complete new engine but actually I think Ford just replaced the short block not the whole engine....the second he got it back he flogged it....beautiful truck to look at, leather, fully loaded....wouldnt want to be the poor sucker that ended up with it.
My mechanic buys the Dodge/Cummins and he trades them in when 2/3s of the power train warr is up (and his labour on repairs would be free!) tells you something.
To the OP.....do your homework

Dude you can't warranty a diesel for longer than it will run, especially the Cummins. Diesel parts may cost more but they last a helluva lot longer than gas parts. Taking your advice we all might as well trade at the end of the warranty.

At the Ford dealership I buy at.. they have a lifetime warr. to the orig. owner. I had my tranny rebuilt on one of our trucks at 176k.. ded. was 25.00.. Henderson Ford gives every customer at no charge as long as the vehicle they sell has less than 100k on the odometer.

I don't have 60k to throw at a new Dually every couple years.
I have NEVER once owned a vehicle with any warranty and have never once been worried about it. 95%+ of diesel trucks out there are off warranty - you're looking at worse case scenarios.
35k is ridiculous - for that price you could have bought 3 complete used powertrains and certainly fixed the problem in a weekend or two.

I'm buying a 2007-2008 diesel over the winter. Are the 6.4L Fords any more reliable than the 6.0L or should I steer away from them? Right now, I'm leaning towards the Duramax/Allison combo. Any worries there?
