At 10' you MIGHT be luck enough to go unnoticed... There's no way someone isn't going to notice 12'!

Towing from TX to Tampa I'd highly recommend getting the proper permits.

permits vary state to state but are usually around $40.00 - annual permits up to 12' are available once you get it home ($132.00 for ohio). call each state's DOT permit division to avoid fees tacked on by third parties.

some states require the "wide load" placard whereas others require the "oversize load" placard. most signs have either on each side.

I towed my father's Wellcraft back from CT. It was 9'10" wide and was about 13'3" tall. We didn't get permits, but I wish I would have - it was nerveracking especially when we blew a tire. Luckily we were right by a truck stop and ducked in there but had we been out on the road and had to change it we certainly would have attracted some unwanted attention.

Sounds very familiar. I pulled a 9'6" cat from FL to CT w/o permits. Same thing happened, I lost a tire in the middle of in VA (I-95), but there was nowhere for me pull off to hide. I wasn't stopped five minutes before a trooper pulled off. He was more interested in the boat itself. He parked behind me, throw out flares (even gave me a couple so I had some on hand) and wanted to know all about the boat itself. Never even questioned that it was well over the legal limit, just wanted to talk and look over the boat. I was pooping pellets the entire time...

I've gotten two overwidth tickets over the years. They are not cheap! And the cops seem to have no sense of humor about it. I have finally learned my lesson and always get a permit, even for short halls.
