Wow, I had a toally different experience.

Had a '00 with the 5.4 and never had any issues. Didn't get any tickets for off the line when towing, but never had traffic lined up behind my either. On the highway, I had to keep the OD off, otherwise it would hunt real bad at 55-60 and struggle. (this was only with my 32. The 27 was no problem)Get up over 65, I'd run and accel. no problem. Seems the faster I drove, the more power it developed.
Had that truck for 3 yrs towing my 27 every weekend, and then the 32 on trips for 1 yr.
Sold that truck and was truckless for 1 yr. That didnt work out. Bought a '03 V-10. ( I think this era has problems blowing sparkplugs out ruining heads, so far I'm good) Can't say it's night and day difference, just an improvement. Main difference is I can leave this truck in OD and no issue. Tranny temp gauge never raises, so I figure all is ok. Neither trucks like steep hills towing. You'll be loosing ground big time with either by time to top. Got very close to same MPG towing with each truck. The 5.4 better non towing. Myself, both work just fine, not great.
Both were 250 SD 4x4's, extended cab, short bed. = same trucks, different motors.

Now, I borrowed my sisters GMC 350 Duramax/Allison once. holly chit, thats a boat pulling truck. :)

Unfortunatley a "new" truck is not in the cards right now. My truck only gets about 5-6K miles put on it now, so Fuel mileage isn't much of a concern. I've been looking for 7.3's and V10's but most of them are crap, or the owners think they are worth their weight in gold. I'm in no hurry, but would like to have something in the next few months.

Look for a '98-02 Dodge 2500 diesel then. No emissions stuff on them. They can be hard to find but I've seen them for sale on www.cumminsforum.com.

The ford v10 is an absolute gas hog. I have an 01 for plowing snow and it gets about 7mpg and it doesnt care if your plowing or not. It does a great job and lots of power but just terrible on gas, I have never pulled with it though. I really dont understand why they even make the motor. The diesol still has more torque and hp and gets double the mpg. I guess it would be the price which is probably why we bought ours.
