Chevrolet Tahoes

Can anyone offer opinions on these vehicles?

My wife and I are having a kid in about 2 months and the lifted Wrangler just isn't going to work, and i am not going to let a child destroy our XJR, so we are looking at these Tahoes.

One in particular we have narrowed down to is a 2007 LTZ - 5.3L, leather woodgrain, etc.... CarFax shows no issues and has records of all history at dealership (oil changes every ~5k, just had differential and fluids change) - only been in for "Service" once.

Thoughts on these things??

OH - and I don't need any commentary on towing - it won't be used for that.

Boomer35 04-05-2011 07:58 AM

i have a 2008 tahoe LT, and i love it. ive got another kid on the way in May and kind of wish i went for the Suburban instead of the Tahoe now. the tahoe is still great, and plenty big, plus i think it looks less soccer mom like then the suburban

Baja_342 04-05-2011 08:05 AM

I do not care for the way the third row is always in your way in the Tahoe/Yukon. A few years ago I compared the Tahoe, Expedition and Aspen. Went with the Aspen. It had more power, more tech and a better price.

I like the looks of the Tahoe better than the Suburban as well and I also think it is more maneuverable for my wife in Parking Lots, etc.... It just has a smaller stance in my mind.

Baja - are you just saying you don't think there is enough truck aft of the 3rd row? Just to confirm, the rear seats are removable correct?

Ted G 04-05-2011 08:29 AM

If you have more than one kid you will appreciate a Suburban more than a Tahoe, although the newer Tahoe is better, but the Sub has enough room for most of life.

FRMULTR 04-05-2011 08:29 AM

I have owned five Tahoes from 99 to 07 and really didn't have any issues with any of them. Then, momma needed a little more bling, so we graduated to an Escalade. Probably ran them all to at least 80,000 miles. Great vehicles!

Yes they are removable, but don't fold into the floor. I thought it would be a pain....if you needed it for seating it may be back in your garage. If you need to load something into the back and they were there they'd be in the way. The design just bugs me.

You can't beat a Tahoe or Yukon for a baby wagon. We bought an 02 w/ 80,000 miles - mint for 10 grand.

BDiggity 04-05-2011 09:38 AM

My tahoe has been very reliable. I now have 211k on the 5.3L. Yes the 3rd row seats are a pain, but i leave them out (instead of folded up) unless we are going to the lake & the kids bringing friends, then i put them in.

Jupiter Sunsation 04-05-2011 09:41 AM

My wife has an 09 Blk/Blk Yukon SLT (shorty like a Tahoe). Truck just hit 37K miles this weekend in 20 months. She had 2 GL Mercedes before this. She prefers the GL, but the GL was a hassle to service and always needed something fixed.

GL Mercedes had a perfect 3rd row (power fold into the floor, flat). Yukon is ok but seats fold up, fold down or can be taken out (no where near as easy to get out of the way!). Yukon has a 5.3 motor and visited the dealer ONCE at 35,700 miles for a door handle (paint chipped off) and steering squeak. Both changed under warranty. Truck gets 16 MPG combined city/hwy.

One thing I hate about it......rear windows don't go down all the way (only 1/2 way due to curve of door/wheel well). The Suburban looks a little more balanced due to the longer wheelbase/extra storage behind 3rd row.

One tip for you, pass on the 2nd row buckets with small kids. The "gap" between the seats is a hassle when a kid drops something it hits the floor and they can't reach it while strapped into a car seat. For adults the buckets are great but for small kids they suck.

Thanks for the feedback guys - I figured at some point about half this board has probably owned one!!

Keep it coming...

Double Down 04-05-2011 10:19 AM

had a 2005 Tahoe Z71 and now a new Escalade and Hummer H!. All of these vehicles sit kinda high off the ground and had 2nd row bucket seats....

Only problem is that for full car seats with side bolsters positioned forward or backward it is a little difficult tucking the kiddos in since you have to lift high to go over the side bolster and then drop them down to strap 'em in. It helps to have side steps too.

That is why some people (non-boaters of course!!) buy minivans  that sit low to the ground and have spacious back seat room.

Also when they get a little bigger they kick the back of the front seats and get mud, dirt and yuck over them and crackers, crumbs and french fries all over the place! Good luck!! :drink:

Quicksilver 04-05-2011 10:39 AM

Go for at least an 09', Tahoe got a 6 speed auto, the 4 speed in the previous years sucks and makes the truck feel lethargic in comparison.

Knot 4 Me 04-05-2011 10:50 AM

Loved my Tahoe. I deleted the third seat option on mine (2002) becuase I knew I would just pull it out and it would sit in the basement. There is no cargo room with third seat in, even with folding the seat down. Not sure if you can still delete the third seat. The dealer will tell you it will kill resale value but it made no difference when I traded.

Double Down 04-05-2011 11:20 AM

or you can wait a year or two and get one of these!!

I had a 99' 5.7 Vortec, put 225k on it with no problems.

I now have an 05' Z-71 with 78k and love it. I bought used and had the third row seats which I hardly use. DVD is nice for trips and the 5.3 runs great. If you have the opportunity to go 07' or newer that is a plus. If you do alot of city driving look at the Hybrid model. 20-21 city is a nice addition. my next one will be Hybrid.

We were just in a bad accident where a driver in a fwy traffic lane went out of control and hit us while we were waiting at a dead stop at an off ramp. All of our airbags deployed and the car went for a spin, however, both my husband and myself, walked away from the accident virtually unharmed. I had to go to the ER because I was 12 weeks pregnant at the time and the medics said it was standard procedure for me to have to go... Our car was wrecked!

The car held up like a champ. With the baby being born in August, the new vehicle I got, had to be safe. We got another Tahoe... a 2008 Black Tahoe LTZ... I love all the features and the fact that I feel incrediby safe in the vehicle makes it perfect for us and our future family... Just my two cents.

From what I can tell our budget is going to put us in an 07-08 in the 40-60k miles range.

We are fairly unconcerned about the DVD player. It might sound weird, but my wife and I are not sure we want the DVD player in the back because we don't necessarily want them to be glued to TV all the time.

Stacey - congrats on your pregnancy!! Hope all goes well, and glad to hear you guys are alright!!

I like the LTZ trim package with the woodgrain, etc...

We have an 01 Tahoe with 130k on it just took the family on a vacation, put 2k on it in ten days, love it!

livinglife2 04-05-2011 02:05 PM

We are on our second Tahoe our 1st one was a 2002 LT 4x4we bought it brand new and put 198K on it and it still was going strong, no major repairs just tires and oil changes. We have a 21' Bryant boat with a wake board tower that we tow all over the place. Going down the road it pulled it like a champ. We just bought a new 2010 left over in January. was able to get a really good price on a new vs used, Its a LTZ loaded to the max, DVD. leather, Nav. with 20's. We have a 2 year old and the DVD is a must for road trips. Have not pulled the boat yet but this one has a higher tow rating so should do great, Also has a six speed trans so it goes to 4 cyl going down the road all you see is the gas milage go up and no loss of power. So far 4K miles and no problems. My vote is for a Tahoe

Top Ven 04-05-2011 02:32 PM

I think it's the best truck on the market ! I have had a 78 Jimmy, a 87 Blazer, 94 Yukon, 00 Tahoe, 03 Tahoe, 07 Yukon, and picking up my new. 2011Tahoe, I have 2 sons that always gotten my old truck, the only trucks that I sold from the list is 78 & 87, most of them have had plows !! And we tow our wave runner and our lil 21 ft CC with the Tahoes

Aquinosteven 04-05-2011 02:36 PM

I love my tahoe. Its an 03 with 180,000 miles on it and it hasnt skipped a beat yet. We got it new and i got it handed down to me when i was 17.

I took it too an offroad park last weekend. Pretty capable vehicle

LTZ usually has the 20 inch wheels too! The DVD on the ceiling isn't great, the aftermarket ones that go in the headrests are better. In the headrest it is eye level for kids in car seats and the roof mount is looking up at 45 degree angle.

With a pair in the headrests and wireless headphones they can each watch whatever they want, no fighting.

Our rule is no TV unless we are on the highway (long trips).

I think the new ones have 0% for 72 months, might help with the budget! :D

Ive had a 96 and 2001, still have a 95(2 door mud truck)) and have driven a 2009 lt extensively. They are solid reliable 4 door suv's plenty of power and good (for their size) handling.

The 95 has 225k mile, the 96 sold with 180k the 2001 sold with 202k. Biggest problems: 2001 got a new trans at 143k and a new ac comp at 75k.

I did a lot of towing with all of them.

Would buy another without hesitation if it fitted my needs.

seafordguy 04-05-2011 04:42 PM

Wow - lot of high mileage trucks here. That's good news....

Quinlan 04-05-2011 07:24 PM

We have a 09 w 6.2 LTZ. Loaded and 22s from the dealer.
No problems yet at 22k. Well except window squeak on driver side when going down.
Now mpg's--- Fuageddaboutit

THRILLSEEKER 04-05-2011 08:52 PM

Back in December we traded the wifes Wrangler for an 03 Tahoe. A week later hooked a 20ft. Whaler to it and drove 1400 miles to the Keys. I'l never make that mistake again. Going on 6 months of owning it, it has more than its fair share of electrical gremlins and I'm less than impressed with the way it handles. Its starting to show a lot of the same electrical issues that my 03 Silverado HD has.

Carguy08 04-05-2011 09:00 PM

Two thumbs up. Good choice.

SkiDoc 04-06-2011 06:00 AM

2002 Suburban 200K miles, great vehicle. Tahoe or suburban very good choice. Consider the suburban longer wheelbase better for towing and much more cargo space. My wife liked to drive it more than her BMW 745. The suburban feels very nimble for it's size. The 5.3 and tranny are a very nice, smooth package.

Potomac Fever 04-06-2011 07:30 AM

I have a 2004 Denali and love it, it just turned 100k last nite. my 3rd row seats fold forward and will hold luggage, I know 4 sets of golf clubs and so on. I take it to Florida and Tn every year since I have owned wth 2 adults and 2 teens and all our crap with no issues. pretty versitle vehicle. mine is AWD great in snow not so much for MPG. but the comfort is worth it.

five cent worth 04-06-2011 08:45 AM

We almost just bought one new two months ago. They were 0% for 72 months on 2010 models at the end of Jan '11.

Didn't pull trigger as we still couldn't swing that much.

Fountain4402 04-06-2011 09:12 AM

they are expensive but nice. IMO a truck with four doors give yous the same thing for cheaper.

Yes and no. Travel with the Tahoe was easy, plenty of room for bags and 5 peeps.

With my HD, we have to scoot all the luggage inside every time we want to stop and do something, plus there is no comparison in the ride.

I'll agree with this. I've owned Tahoes, Suburbans, and pickups, all great platforms and loved each one of them even with there own individual drawbacks. I now have a '04 Avalanche with over 140k miles and will probably always own one because you get the best of all worlds. It's like having all three of vehicles rolled up into one.

Well - I just cut a deal on a local one with 58k on it. LTZ package with all options I believe except Navi and Rear DVD.

Probably a little more than we set out to spend, but hopefully it will prove to be a good purchase in time - I liked this one because the carfax had oil changes every 4k-5k at a local dealership for the entire time. Loved the Champagne and White Leather...

Bugs me too.

I would choose the expedition over the tahoe, or the expedition XL over the suburban because of that.

We were in the same boat in 07 shopping for new. I loved the look of the then new tahoe, but the 3rd row was my issue. We ended up buying a new 08 Expedition because the 3rd row is so much more convenient. and felt the truck was more comfortable and user friendly. 3.5 years so far. No issues. still love it.

FYI I have a 99 tahoe that I bought new - not even a comparison to the new ones of course, but I still have it and love it.

I still think the tahoes and burbans are great vehicles. Prolly can't go wrong either way.

We have a 03 H2 Hummer and it also has electrical problems! Radio will sometimes be on with no audio, power seats, power windows all make noise. It is almost 8 years old now. Would really love it if it had a LBZ Duramax and a two wheel drive transfer case instead of all wheel drive and the 6.0 gas burner.
