Best tow rig under 35k.

OK gents, I am looking for a tow rig, dually, diesel, 4x4. I know it will be used. What is the "best" bet in this situation? It will not be a daily driver just a tow rig and the home depot trips. What is everyones opinion?

main goal is to stay in the low 30s, have something to be proud of, and not be in the shop. Thanks in advance.

sleek1 08-02-2011 07:52 PM

I'm not up to date with the issues of the newer diesels. For around $15K (KBB average) you can get a 7.3 Ford diesel. Many say it's the best diesel Ford ever made.

You can get a lot of nice used stuff for 35k or less. My buddy just picked up an 08 F250 6.4, 45000 miles for under 35k.

if you want to be stuck on the side of the road with the hood open and over heating buy a ford, if you want injector problems, but a chevy, if you want to make it to your boat launch and back home buy a dodge..:drink:

Dodge CTD, had many and they just keep getting better.

Had 2 Ford stints in 2008 and 2010 but never lasted more than 4 months and took a major loss on trade but was what I had to do.

soldier4402 08-03-2011 08:06 AM

Everybody is going to have their little opinion. IMO I would go with chevy or Ford, Go pre 2008 that way you wont have a DPF and you will save fuel mileage. Other than that go with the newest truck with the lowest miles that fits your budget.

Chris 08-03-2011 08:17 AM

all 3 are good trucks...dont see how you could go wrong with any of the choices. if shopping used..your better off taking the approach of NOT being brand loyal and look for the cleanest best deal you can find. in the past past 12 months i have went from Dodge, to Chevy, back to Dodge. personally, i like the CTD

offshorexcursion 08-03-2011 08:20 AM

Dodge Ram Cummins Diesel 6 Speed Manual trans. Most common "hot shot" truck for a reason. Most reliable. Pulls like a freight train. Not overpriced. Dare to compare. What do 90% of semi trucks have? A inline 6 and a manual trans! Semi's keep america rolling. Stick with the Dodge!

I have thought about going with an older ford, just can't seem to find a 7.3 with the "clean look".

I have run across several 2008 fords that I would be very happy with. I am just scared of the issues I have read about. Are the engine issues as common as they appear?

jeff1000man 08-03-2011 10:29 AM

2004- 05 dodge 4x4 3500 is one of the best packages they put together. :coolcowboy:

Just need to find one that doesn't have a lot of miles on it.

Give this man a Gold Star! The 2006-2007 5.9 trucks are the best to buy. The 6speed manual gives the best fuel mileage. Don't worry about the mileage as these engines will run 500,000+ miles before a major rebuild.

Mackattack 08-03-2011 10:50 AM

You should be able to get the fords for damn near free. I had to give away my 6.0 on trade. 2011 Fords are great, but stay away from the 6.0 and 6.4. junk, and you wont be able to get rid of it later.

I like that truck.. I wanted a bigger back seat but it is not a deal killer. That is why I liked the dodge mega cabs.

I personally know the owner and the truck. You won't find a nicer one. The miles are for real also. Bob

drpete3 08-03-2011 05:09 PM

I like my 7.3 Ford. Got it for 11k. and had 100K miles. Body has a little rust but thought I may just redo the body. I too use it for about 10,000 miles a year so my thought is this thing could last me many years if I keep the rust down.

In the end Im saying you may wanna look at some lower priced and older Fords that you can fix up a little cuz if the power train is going to last then Y not?

I've owned my 01 7.3 Ford since 03 and have never had any of those problems. In fact the only thing I can find fault with on the truck is that the front hubs fail prematurely since they used the same bearings and didn't beef them up for the weight of the diesel and the extended dually spacers.

mines not a dually but I have a 250 diesel, got it last year its an 08 with 14k on it XLT, got it for 30, so I think your probably high by about 5-8k.

not mention yours clean retail on it is about 18 and you can get comparable 06-08's for what you are asking

dlange 08-03-2011 09:56 PM

love my 07 5.9 ram. simple, reliable , and lugs better than any new one ive ran yet. The interior looks cheap, but i can deal.

Our '07 Dodge dually gets the best mpg app 18 of any of our Fords or other Dodges BUT it is our first ever 2wd. Our new 11 Dodge dually mega cab 4wd "sucks" the fuel and averages 8 pulling and 12 interstate cruising. Lariat loaded up, big cab and the ac seats are beyond awesome! You really need to be cautious if you want to pull a 5th wheel with the megacab because you can't see out of the darn truck. We had to do the extend-a-goose and extended ball and could very easily still hit the cab with our 48ft trailer that my son races out of. It is very bad when you can't see the 48ft trailer behind you! I (wife) was having a hard time finding the boat trailer for backing it in to load up because of the huge rear cab panel and small back window with the middle head-rest in the way. We finally hooked the boat back up to the 07 and it pulled out perfectly and I could see so much better. I don't like the smaller cab of the Dodges but being able to see out does mean more. I don't know about the previous megacabs as they were a different body so they may not have the same issues as ours. Good luck on your search! We stopped the other night and were looking at the Fords again, just don't know what to think about the fuel additive on the newer ones...

joew. 08-04-2011 09:57 AM

Man, I have never been a Dodge guy but it looks like that is the way to go.

Backup cameras. You need backup cameras. You might think they're expensive but they're cheap insurance.

I wonder how the last 100 years we managed without all these fancy gadgets, now people act as if WE NEED these items to survive? Not knocking you just a general observation

mittens 08-04-2011 01:38 PM

I got my 2500 ffor 18K with 150 on it loaded up. 6 inch lift.

I agree the dodge cummings is a good work horse, BUT I sure do love my duramax and alison tranny....

mine making 592hp, and 1005 tq :)

scarab63 08-04-2011 01:47 PM

I recommend 03 or newer cummins 2 wd dually. I got a 97 cummins and an 03 + will def be my next

jeff1000man 08-04-2011 01:55 PM

I have been using mine regularly for the first time since I have owned it. Fuel mileage has been around 16-17 on the highway. But I had Knobby tires. city still around 13.

That is the first I have heard on the Mega cab about the blind spot, but it makes sense.

I just hate to waste a heavy duty truck and not have an 8' bed.

Most of these responses seem to be pretty positive about what is out there.

I personally like the 2011 DENALI dually that I saw over the weekend. Frigging sweet ride.:coolcowboy:

Ever seen the dents in truck bumpers to the left and tight of the hitch? Chances are it was a man who did that. Women are even worse at backing up trailers and hooking up to receiver hitches. I was just trying to help.
