How often is 4wd needed on ramps?

I used to tow my 25ish Baja with a 2wd pickup. It was embarrassing to have to ask a couple of guys to jump on my rear bumper to give me enough traction to pull the boat out of the water. Switched to a 4wd Suburban, but the extra weight over the back wheels meant I never really needed the 4WD. However, there is nothing quite as useless as a 2wd pickup truck in any kind of snow or ice! You might as well stay home, unless you want to load your bed up with about 500 lbs of junk to get traction! Living where I live, if I'm going to spend the money on a truck and get lousy gas mileage anyway, it sure is going to have 4wd!

With the low lake levels around here there is more sand on the ramp that would normally never be around your rear tires. I have witnessed several 2 wheel trucks unable to get out of the water with a simple ski rig on the trailer. Even my dad had an issue with his bassboat on the ramp. I had no issues with my truck in 4 wheel drive and pulled right out. The ramp is not steep at all, its just the lake level that is causing the sand issues...just something to think about.
