Be SURE that you really need the Diesel..... No matter what anyone tells you, the Diesel truck will cost more to buy, own, maintain, and god help you...repair.
I have had big and small block gas trucks, beaten them hard, and assure you that those trucks cost 1/10th the cost of ownership that my Diesel truck does....
Today... I just dropped $700 for a new water pump, oil change and tire rotation on my '04 Duramax 2500.. 73,000 miles on it...
The gas trucks will tow anything a diesel will, but just with less "performance".
Go diesel if you're towing 12,000+ lbs in hilly terrain.
The new gas engines in these HD trucks are pretty impressive.
I can honestly say that my next personal truck will likely be gas.

You know it all depends on how you are going to use the TRUCK.
I love my 1996 F250 7.3, it has all of 108K on it and my total cost over 12 years of ownership is 20K. But I use it to tow or haul (80% or better towing). Insurance is less then $400 per year. We spend more then that eating out every couple of months. Towing if I stay under 70 mph, 13 miles per gallon and it is VERY clean.
Personally I don't understand why anyone would buy a brand new full size truck if they are only using it to tow maybe 5% of the time.
Any sedan will save a ton of money on gas then the truck, easier to drive, park, go to the fast food junk, on and on.
To me that is what it really comes down to, doesn't matter 1/2 ton or dually, neither is as fun or easy and cheap to drive as a sedan. If you are going to tow back and forth short distance to the ramp, buy a cheap 3/4 gas or diesel and save your payments for the nice car.

only used it 3x yr, never had issues, & was cheap to own.

Where I think your solution works the best is if you have a newer truck and once its paid off relegate it to towing only and pick up a car.
As you said and we all have said you really need to determine what your load is, frequency of towing, distance, etc. Way to many people buy undersized tow vehicles but just as many buy way to big of vehicles. If you can afford it and thats what you like fine.

After hesitating for over week now the truck was sold but thank you for your opinions and information on these trucks. I will still be searching for a diesel, just undecided on what one.
My wife likes the looks of fords but I like duramax and cummins, maybe a cross breed will be in order.

"...just dont know if i will like big diesel for day in day out driving." BDiggity
I owned a 2003 quad cab long bed Ram 3500srw I wish I still had it best truck I ever owned. Yeah it was big but once I got used to driving it in town I really liked it.
How much does your cafe weigh? If you're thinking of a gas truck here are the towing specs for the 2012 Ram 1500 Hemi;

Had an 06 Chevy Duramax 4x4 bought new was a decent truck except the front end looked like it was made from erecter set pieces ($100 alignments and front tires), My Dodge Cummins is a great truck, that is the one I kept.
Towed a lot of miles with gas trucks, Never again! it is real nice to have 600-800 foot pounds of torque!
