Default Back up camera Recommendations...

I removed the back up camera off my old truck and while it was in my tool box it broke, never got to install it because I didn't have a screen. I put a double din DVD in yesterday and when I went to grab my camera the lens had broke, not to mention I left all the wiring on the old truck. Are there any cameras that mount to the license plate and still see the hitch? That's really all I need it for so I can align the truck when hooking up the boat. I had fabbed up something on my last truck because it was a stand alone camera. Just wondering if the license plate ones show far enough down to see the hitch.

Lots of options here:

I went with this one. It's not a spectacular picture or anything, but it does the job. I have it mounted above my plate, below the tailgate; on the top of the bumper.

The higher you have the camera the better, as long as you can aim it. The higher it is, the more it shows you depth perception instead of just left/right. I have learned to look for the shadow of the coupler to hide the ball, then I know I am just the right placement; but that doesn't work in every lighting condition, especially when indoors or dark.

I also do not have mine wired to the reverse on the truck. Instead, I wired it to a separate toggle switch under the dash. Also on that same switch are two Rigid dually LEDs. http://www.rigidindustries.com/Duall.../duallyled.htm (The relay that powers that switch is juiced only when the parking or headlights are on.)

With that switch, I can turn on my backup camera at any time; including when driving forward, at speed. Hit a bad bump? I can flip on lights and camera easily and check the coupler. Camera also works great to see how deep you back the trailer in the water. I also flip it on when making uber-tight turns to make sure I don't jack-knife/contact trailer with back bumper of truck.

I bought one like this off of ebay shipped for $47 and can't be any happier. It has infrared night vision.

You could do that with a video switch. Quick Google search on "12V video switch" came up with this:

http://www.qualitymobilevideo.com/ca...switchers.html

It will be easiest to wire them both live, with a SPDT Toggle Switch to turn on "all cameras" at one time (like I describe above). Then wire a DPDT Toggle Switch to one of the video switch units like in that link.
