Gen6 7.4L + supercharger...?

Hello everyone!

I have a gen6 454 from a '99 chev installed in a 1980 chev 4x4 and I have been mulling over the addition of supercharger for some additional grunt.

But I can't seem to find anyone running this sort of combo with a basically stock motor.

That's when I realized that a lot of these motors were used for marine applications and several people have slapped on blowers, so I thought I'd come to pick your brains.

I've done some homework on the truck gen6's and from what I can gather, I should be fine with stock internals and 9:1 compression @ 5-6psi since I'm not planning on going beyond 5,000rpm.

However, when I asked both Summit and Holley on what they recommend *both replied saying that they don't offer anything for my application.

I have no idea if it's because of the factory GM 6rip serpentine accessory drive setup, if it's an issue with the heads, or something else.

As it sits now, my motor is stock (9:1 compression, 99cc iron heads, stock pistons, stock crank, ect) with the addition the following:

-Holley 670cfm truck avenger carb
-GM M1 marine takeout cam
-new 454HO dual valve springs
-new rotor shim eliminators
-new retainers/keepers/seals
-double roller timing chain

Soooo...for those of you who've went with a supercharger on top of these motors, any info you can provide me with would be fantastic.
Such as which kit you went with, any issues you've ran into as far as installation, any overheating issues when using iron heads, ect...

Thanks very much!

Whipple used to make a kit for the 454 Vortec truck engines in the automotive world. I think they ran 4-5lbs of boost. You can run a blower, just need to keep boost no more than 5lbs, and make sure the tune is right on. Timing and fuel, the cast parts wont handle any detonation.

Vortec never made a kit for 454's?

I know Vortech had kits in the early 2000's for the LS motors. Was just wondering out loud if they had ever made a kit for the 454's like would have been in the 454 SS trucks of the early 90's.

I meant GM ''Vortec". Meaning the 1996-2000 L29 "vortec" 454 engine.

The vortec supercharger was for EFI only, it won't work with my carb :p

I left the "h" off of "Vortech" in my first post, which was confusing. I was always referring to the supercharger company, not the GM Vortec motors. Sorry for the confussion.

i use to install powerdyne on the ss 454 pick up's back in the day...the weak link back then was the crank would break if you stood into it too long..the only one your going to find for your application is a procharger with a carb hat..@ 9 to 1 i would not go over 4 psi..

Did you SS have a forged crank?

And why would 9:1 only go to 4psi?
(as what what is the limiting factor)
