Train Horns Anyone?

There was a guy with a big rig towing a cat up at boyne and he had a train horn on his truck that nearly made me crap my pants. Anybody have one or know of one that is priced well and sounds good.

Drock78 08-24-2013 09:34 PM

they sell for about $120 and you will need an air supply

Horn boasters is probably the best place to get the entire setup you'll need. I run 2 sets of horns on my F250. I pieced the kit together back in 06 & only had a single set on my Duramax. In 08 when I bought the 250 I added 2 new Viar 480C compressors & upped my air pressure to 200 psi along with adding the 2nd set of horns. Knowing what I know now & if I had to start from scratch, I would just buy a compete setup from HB.

45SS 08-25-2013 09:15 AM

Xtreme diesel sells a bunch of different train horn kits. Some are expensive.

mainstreet 08-25-2013 09:57 AM

back in the early 80's I had a ford fiesta for a run around car. I put three air horns under the hood. No one ever had a clue where the noise was coming from. Miss that horn!

weldcrane 08-25-2013 10:20 AM

air horns of texas is where to get them

averagejoe074 08-25-2013 11:30 AM

can always build your own set of train horns http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qE-E2EuWR0Q

I have a set on my dually that came off of eBay for around $160.

I'll be redoing part of it over the winter. I can't figure out why the compressor keeps turning on every 5 minutes. I can't find an obvious air leak, and I want louder horns anyhow. I currently have them under the passenger side of the bed, but want them up front behind the grill as well. I may leave the 4 horns on the back and add 4 more up front with a bigger system. Plan is to tie the rear airbags into the same compressor and add a port for an air hose for filling tires as well.

I've can't say I've pranked with them too many times, but I do use them quite frequently to get back at those asinine drivers that show no respect to someone towing. You have to be careful how they will react though. Sometimes they cut in front of you, you blast them, and they end up braking. Timing is everything. In such an instance it's better to blast them once you get up beside them a few moments later.

As long as he can install it behind the grille of my Ford, I'm game. Other than that, it's just a novelty. Cool one though.

carter38 08-26-2013 07:52 AM

I did a K5 nathan on my dually pretty insane 1/2 air lines.

s022mag 09-06-2013 08:02 AM

I'm seeing that the Leslie's and Nathan's are the way to go. Gonna give that authentic train sound. What I was willing to pay for a setup now is just going to be the horn, ouch. This will be a work in progress.

carter38 09-06-2013 08:03 AM

It's not cheap but you get what you pay for.

ezstriper 09-07-2013 08:34 AM

tons on ebay...have had 2 sets(in 12 years) on my gibson....LOUD !!!!! mine held up well for cheap stuff...

Yes you do. The one request from my wife when I sold my one ton was the train horns came off it first. Sitting in the garage just waiting for the next project.

Mid 70's production date Leslie RS5T.

She wants them on her jeep. I just have to figure out the system for the air stuff. :D

s022mag 09-09-2013 10:30 PM

I think I'm going to go with Nathan's 3 horn setup, they seem pretty loud and sound like the real thing. Been seeing them for about 650. Figure I can get a tank cheap, just need to find a pump and all the other stuff.

Might get it mounted and fill the tank at home and use it here and there for a few pranks.

garrett28 09-11-2013 01:39 PM

We scrap alot of locomotives out and usually get these in from time to time.... and not the little sissy ones for a few hundred dollars. We sell good used ones for $1200 all day long. The ones that have 3 horns are usually the loudest ones but you need a pretty good air supply to really blow them right. Need a good compressor and a pretty good size holding tank to try and maintain good constant pressure (i think it is 120psi). I do have 10 bells sitting around.... be funny backing a boat in..... Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding. I will try to put my hands on a few if anyone would be interested.

sleek1 09-26-2013 09:28 PM

I was looking into this 3 or 4 years ago. I started getting crazy looking at Nathans from $600-1200 just for the horns... 3 horn to 5 horn. Finally told myself I was getting out of control and scrapped the idea. Thanks guys you've got me thinking about it again.

Well I finally bought a Nathan's K3LA from a guy out west, he sold me the horns, tank(tiny thing that won't hold $hit) and the actuator switch for under 500. Though it was a pretty good deal seeing the horns go for 650 easy. No compressor which is fine for now, I was able to get my hands on a nitrogen tank and regulator for the air supply. I have it temped in the bed of the truck just to show some friends how loud it is.

When I first got it I hooked it up to my 135psi compressor and was not impressed at all, then I realized that it was 3/8 line with 1/4 connectors only pushing 110psi out, ain't gonna do it. So this morning I ran 1/2 line to regulator to a temp shut off valve straight to horns. Set reg to 140psi put ear protection on and holy $hit that was loud.

Don't think they will fit behind grill so might have to pull spare or find another location.

s022mag 10-04-2013 09:14 AM

Not the prettiest but roughed in for fun. Tank will fit in tool box and manual valve will get replaced with electric. Just wanted to make sure it was authentic. My stomach vibrated that's how loud it is.

do you have room under the truck? then put the socks over the front of the horns to keep the chit out..

s022mag 10-04-2013 09:07 PM

I will prob drop my spare seeing that I run 20's most of the time. This is hilarious, my gf heard them and her exact words were your going to kill someone.:lolhit:

I had a 1981 Buick Electra Park Ave. It had the four note horn option that was also available on Cadillac and Olds. That horn was really loud and had a train like tone to it. Rather amazing when you consider it was just four electric horns. I pulled them from it when I scrapped the car and put them in my truck, really great for a cheap horn. When I picked up my new truck I went on e-bay and bought a set for $100, I bought the newer ones from the newer style (mid Ninties I think), pretty good too, but a little smaller size and also not quite as loud. I'll do it again when I get a new truck but I'll look for the older bigger style from the early eighties cars.

commandersander 10-06-2013 10:18 AM

I have two piggieback kl5a,s under the bed of my truck and nitrogen tank like yours with a regulator and all 1/2" lines. I started with the manual hand valve in the truck.....and believe it or not, I like the tone best regulated at 86psi. What makes the hand valve so cool is the ability to manually regulate the volume of air so the tone changes as you pull harder........
w w w w wwwwwWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANT

As you are thinking, I though of putting an electric solenoid hooked to a switch. I lost the ability to honk Like a train.....slow start to full blast....but it was cool to WHATWHAT instead of pulling the lever

Last month, I changed from compressed air to nitrogen and a bizarre issue developed. The solenoid hangs on the nitrogen and repeatedly hitting the button as well as killing power completely does nothing. My horns are so loud that the t handle on the regulator vibrates and backs out, and when the pressure in front of the solenoid gets to about 30psi the solenoid finally releases.....but that takes about 10-12 seconds of continuous full on honk.

I do oil my system at tank change which is only about every 7 months....seriously considering going back to the manual valve.

Either way.....this is the way to do it. The other guys around town blow their horn and it's done in a few seconds. I could blow mine for hours before I run out of air!

I'm betting your issue with the solenoid sticking when you went to nitrogen was the pressure. Your compressed air system might be 150-200#, but the pressure on a nitrogen bottle is in the 2,000 - 4,000 # range. Your solenoid valve probably isn't rated for that, unless your using a regulator out of the bottle, knocking it down to a decent working pressure.

s022mag 10-07-2013 10:41 AM

He's running a regulator you have to with nitrogen tanks. Now I do know that nitrogen is a dry air that's why we use them at work, your compressor with have moisture unless you install a dryer of some sort like what people use on paint guns. Don't know if that could be a problem for you.

My switch actuator just $hit on me about after the 5th hit, the gasket is leaking, could be from age, or possible not rated that high. How much does it cost to fill your tank?

I forgot about these horns. I just bought a set on eBay to put on my daily driver sedan.

Are these horns normally hot and switched ground to activate;
...or apply 12V+ to activate like most 12V accessories?

(My F-350 was the former which surprised me when I was adding my train horns.)

I did not check, or switch these seperatly as I wanted the steering wheel horn button to activate them. In both cases I just split the wiring on the truck going to the stock two horns into four and hooked them up.

ThisIsLivin 10-14-2013 12:14 PM

My dad had a set on his old S10 pickup, I used to sit at the train tracks and hit them when someone was getting ready to cross. I know not very nice, but it was hilarious to see their reaction.

Installed them on my daily beater this weekend and promptly blew the factory fuse. :D
They don't compare to the train horns on my dually, but I do feel like I am driving a 1980s Estate Wagon when I hit them. I've got them hooked up with the factory horns, so now six total.

Can anyone recommend a set if horns in the $150 to $200 range. My step son wants a set for his beater for christmas. Thanks

This is fair for the price IMHO; and the seller was easy to work with. I ended up buying outside of eBay which saved me a few bucks.
