Pulling a Top Gun

There was a guy up in Toledo that used to pull his TG with a 1500 MaxTow. It's one of the boats for sale in the classifieds now as a matter of fact, not saying I would recommend it but he did it for a couple of years as I recall seeing it at the ramp.
I used to pull my cousins 38 TG with my 2007 2500HD Gasser. It got the job done at the time, not sure I would do it again tho. As said that boat was all of 14K full of fuel on the trailer.

For reference my 2014 F-350 SRW crew cab short bed with a 6.7 is rated to pull 14,000 with a conventional style hitch. I am sure it could be done with less, but that seems like a big risk to take. To me the decision wouldn't be 1/2 ton vs. 3/4 ton vs. 1 ton, it would be SRW vs. DRW. I personally can't stand daily driving a dually so I would be inclined to find a SRW that would pull that load safely, and I think you have plenty of options. Having personally driven both the F250 and F350 in SRW flavor before buying my truck I found very little ride difference between the two.

My PowerQuest 380 Avenger weighs about the same. I pull it once in the spring and then again in the fall to and from storage and a couple times per year to get fuel when gas dock is not open with a 1/2 ton Avalanche. These runs are only a few miles away, on level grade and 45mph max. It does ok, but would not consider highway speeds. Bridge approaches, will move you around some. Braking not a problem, as long as trailer brakes are working. If the trailer brakes fail, you are screwed. Hell, I need to use 4 LOW to get it out of the water and it does struggle. No 1/2 ton is designed for such a load.
I borrow a 2002 Ford 7.3 PSD for LOTO trips and it struggles through the hills in KC and even more once we get close to the lake. Much safer and capable truck, but still lacking the power to pull comfortably.
